Have you checked out Nuance - Dragon - Dragon NaturallySpeaking ?

Dragon NaturallySpeaking is definitely the most powerful app out there. But Windows Vista and 7 comes with support for speech to text already I believe.

Dragon works best for doctors and lawyers. For regular users, I think W7's inbuilt speech to text is good enough.

Regular users on the other hand use a fairly small vocabulary, which is supported by most trivial speech to text software in the market

Yes. "Nuance - Dragon Naturally Speaking" is a truly professional but a pretty expensive software. for beginners or normal users windows inbuilt could be enough.
