My present PC's specs are:MB: D102GGC2 with onboard ATI Radeon Xpress 2002 GB DDR2P-4 3.0 GhzIts about two years old. The problem is that when I tried to run Windows 7 on it, there were a lot of problems. First, the Aero theme would simply not start. Then I found a driver after a lot of searching, and got the Aero running, but if I start an HD video, the graphics card crashes - it gives a message that the driver stopped working and was started successfully. Sometimes the computer just freezes with coloured lines all over the screen. Also, XP mode won't run because the PC has no hardware virtualization.I run mainly XP so it isn't such a big problem, but I'm buying another PC, for home, and while no one is going to play games on it, I want it to run Windows 7 smoothly, and I want it between 15 and 18K. My assembler has suggested the following configuration:MB: Biostar G31D - M7P-4 2.8 Ghz HT2 GB DDR2 RAM18.5 inch HCL TFTand the other stuff. Will this config run Windows 7 properly? The MB is not Intel, so I might get an Intel original one instead. I also asked for dual core, but my assembler says this HT one is better. Please advise. :)

Compromise a bit on the monitor and go for i3 based config.Or I have been told that AMD is better for budget comps, but have no idea about AMD proc's so wait for someone to reply with an AMD based config

HT is older. P4 2.8 HT is very old, but I doubt that he's going to use an old Socket 478 processor as I would have known them years ago... Core2Duo is newer and better, but more expensive (may be out of your budget, I don't know off hand), so the processor suggested should be sufficient. The motherboard can run pretty much any of the Intel-brand CPUs you can throw at it today, so if you feel the need you could upgrade to C2D in 1 year I guess and sell off the old one on Ebay.

Genuine Intel boards aren't that great in my experience, and usually quite expensive by comparison with some other brands. I'd suggest Gigabyte or Asus (NOT Asrock) boards. Gigabyte are usually good value for money.

2GB is about the minimum amount of RAM you'd see in a PC these days. You could try and increase it to 3 or 4GB, but try and get good quality. Kingston ValueRAM, if you can.

These days an LCD monitor is an LCD monitor is an LCD monitor. Back in the day I'd have recommended Viewsonic (excellent warranties), but nowadays it's a big ??????. Samsung are also pretty good.

All in all, pretty much anything you buy (so long as it's new) will run Windows 7. Also suggest a separate graphics card if you can fit it in your budget, especially if you want to do any kind of gaming. If it's just office work and solitaire, no need.

i3 performance is pretty ordinary when compared to core2duo processors. i am myself looking for a cheaper quad core amd solution as i am not prepared to pay Rs. 15K for the Q9550 Intel quad core!

If at all you want to buy an Intel quad-core processor never go for Core 2 Quad series. Instead go for either i5 or i7. Cuz i5 or i7's architecture is quite different from Core 2 series which makes the former better and efficient processor. Also they are cheaper than Core 2 Quad processor.

Get AMD if possible , Athlon II X2 240 costs ~ 2.4k , excellent dual core processor at that price point Plus AMD motherboards have much better onboard graphics (like the Radeon 4200)

Again AMD offers better value , the 6 core Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz costs 10.5k and easily outperforms even i7 - 920

I got a rough estimate of the price: 18K. The person who assembles the computer works in a company. He assembles computers only from time to time, and he gets all the parts from friends who are dealers. The processor is an Intel dual core. I asked him to change the Motherboard, and he gave me the names of three Asus MBs, of which it will one. The three are: ASUS P5QPL-AM which has Intel GMA X4500 graphics, and ASUS P5KPL AM / PS and ASUS P5PKL AM IN, both of which have Intel GMA 3100. I've decided to use the 1GB RAM that I've got with me which I don't use, and add more later when the price falls, so price of RAM is not included in the total price. The monitor is still HCL 18.5, changing it to Samsung or LG means adding another 2K to 2.3K.The speakers will cost around 1K. I decided not to go in for the .5K ones.I don't know about the other stuff, like the HDD. This computer will be used by my parents, mainly for typing and stuff, and occasionally for movies. The one I use has a lower configuration, but its okay for me, since it can easily run 720p movies, and I don't need to play games. Adding 2K for the Samsung / LG LCD pushes the price to 20K, which is still without RAM. The price seems too high, and all this only to get Aero running.
