Tata Sky bets on IBM's SOA platform

Tata Sky, the leading direct-to-home (DTH) satellite television operator, is betting on service oriented architecture (SOA) technology platform of IBM to deliver its next level of services.

Tata Sky, which was incorporated in 2004, decided to go in for the SOA platform as it wanted a technology platform which would provide them with the flexibility as well as the scale to meet its future demand.

The DTH operator is looking at expanding its services portfolio by bringing in SMS and webenabled activities. Chakrapani Perangur, CIO, Tata Sky, said it is looking at expanding into these services and SOA will be the technology enabler, given its flexibility and scaleability.

For Tata Sky, adopting IBM's SOA platform was much easier than others as it was greenfield venture and was fresh investment into technology. Perangur said it wanted a technology that could be implemented on a large scale geared up to meet the future requirement. Though the initial investment into SOA is relatively higher, the benefits derived out is over a period of time, nullifies the initial costs, claimed the IBM and Tata Sky officials.

Dulles Krishnan, Country manager, Enterprise sales, Software group, IBM, said, SOA is able to meet the requirement of business which has the potential to scale very fast and it has also come out with very industry specific SOA technologies.

Tata Sky is looking at having a subscriber base of eight million mark by 2012 from the current level of over one million. It is based in Bangalore and spread across 32 locations. Perangur said that one of the biggest benefits of SOA is that they are able to use lesser number of people who have the ability to perform multiple functions

Right now these guys according to me shd work on market capitalisation, get more and more customers to be a part of their network then improve technologies to lure more customers and offer more premium services..Being just a 3 yr old compnay now they shd concentrate more on satisfying the customers more than anything else.. Hopefully we see some good in 2008..Right now i hate being a part of TS.. cos i dont think i have my money worth.. 300 INR for nothing.. what they called latest technology is only dipped.. where have the multicamera angles vanished from actv sports..Tata Sky :wall:
