Tata Sky, Sun TV row close to settlement

NEW DELHI: Direct-to-Home operator TataSky and Sun TV are inching toward settlement of their nine month- old dispute on feed sharing, with the south-based broadcaster agreeing to provide its channels in suitable packages.

During proceedings before broadcast tribunal Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), counsels appearing for both the sides today informed the bench that negotiations were going on. The tribunal has adjourned the hearing to August 8.

Contrary to its earlier stand, Sun TV has informed the tribunal that considering TataSky's demand, it would provide region wise packages of its channels to the DTH operator.

In its earlier proposal on July 30, Sun had offered to provide its 20 channels in six packages at different rates, which was immediately rejected by TataSky, which said it was not consumer friendly.

Sun's each package consisted Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada channels.

TataSky, a 80: 20 joint venture between Tata group and broadcast major Star India, had contended that these packages did not suite the interest of its south-based regional viewers.

"Packages should suit the regional audience. A Tamil viewer should not be forced to pay for Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada channels," counsel appearing for TataSky said.

Sun TV, owned by south-based industrialist Kalanidhi Maran, is also going to launch its own DTH platform very soon.

This is really indeed a good news and I think TataSky will get sun channels soon. The best part is that region wise package which sounds good for the customers:yahoo:. Because of TataSky Dish TV will also benifit:wall:. Anyway if the settle is made earlier credit should go to TataSky:thumbsup:

its SUN's ploy.. afterall they will also need star channels.

yes, the same ploy was employed by Star when Tata Sky was to launch and just few days before they started to share its channels on Dishtv. i think tatasky launched on 8th august and dishtv got star channels in july.

its SUN's ploy.. afterall they will also need star channels.

and TDSAT guys are goign to lose their samosas LOL :p

:hysterical: samosas , yes for sure they will miss.

Once Sun TV regional packages comes in Tata Sky, I think we will have better packages. I believe either tatasky will have a similar packages what Dish has (Choose one regional option) or Existing package will continue and if we need sun channels based on the region wise sun boquet we need to pay extra.

I think Tata Sky will stick to its existing grouping of bouquets - basic, indian, western and supersaver - and will offer 6 or 7 channels per language. In tamil I think they will add only 3 sun channels - sun tv, sun news and KTV (movies).

I belive the same as when i called tatasky cc for the Star Cricket channel they told me that if Sun comes to tatasky they will continue with the existing pack and sun would be given in alacarte basis means region wise. Lets see what happens.
