Marvel Studios is in final negotiations with WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell to write the script of Captain Marvel 2. Details of the story have yet to be revealed, but this report does note that the sequel will take place in the present day of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios is said to want a 2022 release date for Captain Marvel 2 and are currently searching for a female director to helm the film, as Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck - who co-directed the first installment - are not returning, but may tackle a Disney+ project instead.
Marvel Studios is officially releasing four films in 2022, but only Black Panther 2 has a confirmed release date in May. If Captain Marvel 2 is going to arrive that year, Marvel has options, with the February or July dates the most likely landing spots for the film.
