The bluetooth icon has suddenly disappeared from my laptop. And this is what it shows in the settings. There's no option to turn it on.

Any troubleshooting steps?

If you have a Linux Live CD you can check if it shows up there. If there too it is not visible, it is probably a hardware issue.

Yeah windows updates i guess....i have seen them mess a lot of things than do any do any good feature wise except the mandatory Windows security patches

You can try reinstalling its drivers though

The laptop did install an update today.

Perform a restore to a previous date to see if the update is the culprit.
