Hi,

I have an AMD Turion 64 based entry-level compaq laptop with 1 GB RAM.

I am running 32 bit XP Pro SP2.

I have been trying Linux on/off (mostly off) for the past few years.

I have always given up on Linux after just using it for a few days due to its cryptic user experience. The media playback facilities were lame.

I have heard good things about ubuntu 7.10. I am going to install it when it is released in the nest week.

I am going to dual boot with my 32 bit XP Pro SP2.

What will you recommend I do? Dual boot with 64 bit or 32 bit ubuntu?

Will 64 bit make my computer's performance better or is it useful for high-end memory-intensive application that take lots of RAM??

Please advise whether there will be conflict if I dual boot with 32 bit XP and 64 bit ubuntu. :P

umm i guess u should be going with the 32 bit version... since you are going to play with it and test it out no use experimenting with the 64 edition.adobe has not apparently released flash plugins for windows 64 bit editions not sure what kind of software issues u might end up facing in the 32 bit edition. :)

Any idea if iTunes & utorrent play nice on ubuntu? Is there support for Netgear wi-fi setup and will I be able to find drivers for my wifi thingy in my laptop? I am currently usinf my airtel beetel 220 modem and netgear wifi router for my home wi-fi setup.Sorry, If my questions sound stupid. But I simply will be stranded if wi-fi does not work on ubuntu. :o

ok. here is the thing. windows applications does not work on linux. u can try out wine but it is generally not recommended and it does not work with all windows software.itunes? i suggest you use rhytmbox or amarok. if you are looking at sync an iPod you should not face any problems unless you are using the latest generation one.about utorrent, it seems to work fine under Wine on Linux but I suggest you give Ktorrent a try. it is pretty similar so u should not face any problem with it.as for wireless routers. try the beta. it is supposed to support the wi-fi hardware more easily... if you have any doubts, u can always use Wubi or Live CD.

@sushubh. Apple does not provide install for Linux? That sucks. :(I will be in trouble as I am using the latest gen iPods (160 GB classic and 16 GB iPod Touch).:oI guess I will use the windows boot to do my iTunes thing.Thank you all for the help.

well... those players are new. so it takes time for the OS people to reverse engineer things and get them working.i cannot use my first generation zune on linux. but ipod is more popular and people actively work on making sure their products can work on linux.Apple of course does not support any platform other than windows and macs.

@scooby-dooby-doo: stick to the 32-bit version since you have 1gb and the 64-bit version might have some issues as posted above already

64 bit is will be blazing fast for you, but a lot of drivers/software/support is missing for the 64 bit version as it is relatively new. You can try it out though, Ubuntu says this one is going to be different. The fact that the 64 bit version will be over 150% faster cannot be debated. It is true and I have experienced it myself.
