Ubuntu and Windows XP and Vista with 2 harddisks

I have 2 seagate harddisks1. 160 GB @ 7200 RPM, 2 MB cache2. 360 GB @ 7200 RPM, 8 MB cache.I am planning to install Vista 64 bit on 360 GB for sure as 360 GB is having 8 MB cache; Plus I want XP because dos based apps dont run in Vista 64-bit.Also I m new to Linux and I want I should have a look on linux, I m planning to install Ubuntu 8.04 LTS 64-bit(I have its CD)Please suggest me best partitioning method including sequence of OS like this comes first, this one next, etc. And also partition size recommended for each OS and media storage.I already own following backup media data on separate HDD which should be transferred to internal HDDs-1. Songs 40GB2. Games 12GB3. Softwares 20GB4. Photos 2GB5. Movies 120 GBShould I make individual partitions which I had previously or single partition to store this data??Thanks in advance!
 
my suggestion:install all OS only on 360 GB HDD1. create 2 partitions of 50 GB each for win vista & win xp2. create a partition of around same size for linux too (dont know much of that)3. create 1 more partition of remaining space for the remaining stuff.create 1 or 2 (maximum, not preferable) partitions on 160 GB HDD & use it to store more data
 
After searching threads in other forums, I m now planning to go in d following way-=360GB=1. XP 20 GB(I wanted to make it big but have fear in mind that free space will be wasted)2. Vista 25 or 30 GB (Is 25 GB enough??)3. Storage(As Rachit said its better to keep 1 vol for all data like songs, pic, movies; these will be distributed in folders around 300 GB)=160GB=1. 160 GB for storage, In this HDD i wanna install Ubuntu; shd I install it on MBR means first partition of 10~15 GB will be given to Ubuntu?, Rest for data storage-OR-160 GB storage and then shrink vol to 90% and install Ubuntu in rest 10%(This was thought because as I m newbie for linux, suppose if it didnt got digested for me, I'll be in a position to remove 10% vol and regain free space, if it is possible, I dont know, can anyone tell me is it possible??)

for your 1st question regarding vista if 25 GB is enough

i have installed vista ultimate sp1 64 bit which took 9 GB. if you dont plan to install many other software then fine.
in my case, with other huge software which takes few GB's each, the OS + installed program files went upto almost 20 GB
to be on a safer side, i suggest at least have a partition of 35 GB.

regarding linux, you can always delete the partition which has linux & use it in windows. also you can merge the space you get from linux into an existing partition using some software like partition magic

btw i'm no expert but i've read on forums & stuff that its good if you spare 25% of your HDD space. it gives a faster operating speed. does anyone know why?
 
I will suggest:360 Gb HDD -> Primary Master160 Gb HDD -> Primary Slave or Secondary MasterPartition:360 -> 40+40+40+RestInsatll WinXp on Ist 40 Gb PartitionInsatll Vista on IInd 40 Gb PartitionInsatll Linux on IIIrd 40 Gb PartitionRest for Storage.160 -> Full as Storage.Install Linux in the last and use MBRBTW you can test drive Linux using a live CD, where you don't have to install it, it boots from CD and provide you every thing to test drive it, most of the distros have live CD.
 
Thanks a lot guyz once again!After doing loads of research I did d following things-=360 GB=1. 1st partition- XP- 20 GB(took 2 GB for OS installation, After installing office, foxit, audio players, etc. essentials, its 13 GB free)2. 2nd partition- VISTA- 30 GB(OS took appx. 10 GB, here I've installed everything ranging from PC suite to tune-up utilities, still 15 GB)3. 3rd partition- STORAGE- 286 GB(Place for setup files, songs, movies, etc. together. KISS THEORY ROCKS!) Linux Update- Will shrink this volume to use Ubuntu =160 GB=1. Single partition- 149 GB(A place for all hidden stuff, I cant disclose here; Sushubh will delete this topic otherwise:rofl:"Hey DUDE, Latest collection mangata kya?":):):) Hey kidding otherwise!:P
 
u guys are boasting about ur GBs...i still have 40 GB HDD in my office PC...and i have to delete stuff almost daily to make space... :cry:

You don't have to cry for that, if your 40 Gb HDD is serving your purpose its good. For normal day to day office or home use, you don't need those TBs of space.

dont worry coolbuddy, even i'm at a similar fate like you. i dont have any 360 GB HDD, i only have 200 GB :P
