look at the cost of bandwidth in india. and you can see why everyone is hosted outside. sure local news companies etc. are hosted locally because that helps with performance a lot. but generally speaking, more than half of the web services you access on a daily basis are most likely hosted in the usa. and with the lack of privacy laws we have here in india, i can only hope that the case remains like that for a long time to come.

Many international companies have their servers in India. Many in Hyderabad. There are many factors for choosing server locations. Not everything is hosted in US.

Internet is collection of networks. So everything is not hosted only in US, many choose us based hostings bcoz of geographical access factors. But content which is mostly accessed thruought the world has multiple mediums of hosting at mutiple locations and the data request in normal course gets fulfilled by the nearest avilable one.

As said by other memebers, we do habe large server setups/data center floors across various locations and but hosting services to these centers have its own advantages and disadvantages.
Also, just to clarify hosting server is not like hosting internet as asked by a member above. There has to be cluster of servers which support the huge data requests and bandwidth is a medium thru which you reach to these servers.

Seismically, Hyderabad is among the safest places in the world. That's one of the reason it hosts many servers. Its also close to Submarine cables that originates from SE India.

Another thing is that as you go farther from origin of Submarine Cables, cost of Internet tends to get expensive. That's why Internet is expensive in Northern India specially Punjab and Delhi/NCR. Also there are very limited ISPs in these areas of India compared to WS and SE.

Meanwhile, pakistan has cheaper and faster internet than us! Lahore is 15 minute drive from my home and it has 4mbps at reasonable price! I wonder why there are no cable stations in gujarat? Are there any?
