I have got this item from bsnl.Problem is I am not able to get the web interface of the modem/router. I am able to ping ok with 192.168.1.1 And i am able to browse the internet.Help pls , with thanks

Why do you want to access the modem settings if all Ok ?
IN IE open 192.168.1.1 userID admin Password admin
If the modem pages do not open BSNL might have changed the password. try bsnl
Then you have to reset to factory settings for default password.
If you are connecting through Dialer, all ports are open for torrents etc.

I have made a mistake.
I have kept the IPaddress of the pc as 192.168.1.1.
Hence when I ping , I am getting a reply and I was thinking that this is from modem.
What are the settings to be kept for LAN-TCP/IP

IN TCP/IP properties page select Obtain IP address automatically.DNS use Open DNS 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222See the website of Chennai for settings.

after you select obtain ip automatically as mentioned by essbebe above, go to the command prompt(start->run and type cmd) and post output of ipconfig here
