Very weird behaviour Airtel Xstream Gigabit Plan

Talking about 1Gbps Point to Point (Where one is your modem and other hand is anything you're testing) cannot be 1Gbps always. Both parties must have enough bandwidth to have 1Gbps Speed.

Now, if your modem to Vodafone is doing 1Gbps which is there is nothing wrong there. Line is fine, connection is fine. What is wrong then?

1. Routing (which I highly doubt because if someone start to say that Airtel's routing is wrong, then they haven't used many other ISP which claims to have best routing but they can only give good speeds on local servers or peered for example: Excitel, MBR and many more).

2. Bandwidth at the Receiving end: If the server you are testing at doesn't have enough bandwidth of 1Gbps then speed will throttle to that point only.

Jio also uses 10GBit main line and that connects to the individual 1Gbps Fiber Lines. So basically my whole area runs on 10Gbit Backend only.

1Gbps in countries which has poor backend or poor inter-state connectivity cannot commit 1Gbps. In a country where one ISP doesn't care to link with other ISP.

For example, Jio knows that Airtel is India's biggest Private Broadband network but they have not synced their network with Airtel. Jio to Airtel or Airtel to Jio is pathetic. Given that, Jio wants to become India's third transit (not sure if they will share that transit with others or not)

Why Downgrading of plan is recommended?

1. No matter how strong the ISP is in India, the practicality of 1Gbps is zero even in many USA States. It's not the issue of India but many countries have this issue where they don't have enough bandwidth to make the 1Gbps a good choice. Europe's some countries are exceptional because they have a very good inter-connectivity. Like anyone from Germany to Netherlands can have full speeds. Think of it like downloading anything from Delhi to Punjab but with a good Fiber connectivity. But Crotia to Netherlands? Crotia is in EU but has poor internet.

UK? They still run on ADSL/VDSL.

So whatever your aspirations about 1Gbps or ISP it is... No one can commit 1Gbps even though you are paying them.

2. Excitel shows 1Gbps everytime is because they have no routing of themselves. They don't even know the meaning of routing. They use third-party for their routing which is why they are able to give good speeds. They use Extreme-IX which has inter-routing with multiple ISPs that is why you have good speeds. But what will happen if the server you select has no transit with Extreme-IX? 1Mbps or so only.

Take the advice of your area manager and downgrade your plan. Even if it's a backend issue which I suppose could be because your area's fiber is old.... I don't think Airtel is going to fix it. They don't have enough money in their pocket to re-pay your area's MCD or alternative... to have another dig and fix it.

They are using their last bunch of monies in the areas where they see they can make new money now as they are loosing customer to Jio and other ISPs because of poor copper wires they have been running.

Comparison between Excitel and Airtel is not possible. Airtel is nationwide second and last transit. Excitel uses transit of VSNL or Airtel to route traffic outside India.

There is one real-life practical though.

If your friend nearby has 1Gbps plan? Airtel is a open network. Somehow connect both the computer and make a tunnel in between and test if your upload to his system which will be download for him is of what speed?

Route: Your Home ---> Local Hub (If they have any for the FTTH) --> Manesar or any other ---> His Local Hub (which should be same as your's) ---> His Home.

^ This is only for test purpose, I am not sure what could be the results or how justified it is. But since it's Airtel to Airtel test. I think it should hit 1Gbps given that there is enough power on OFC and has no fiber issue in area.

Vodafone: I understand that your speed Airtel to Airtel (speedtest.net) should be full but how can we even know if Airtel has 1Gbps open for the test? Maybe they have limit it to 500-600 Mbps level? We can never tell.

Airtel to Vodafone used to be 10% of the plan back-in-days and Vodafone was the least opted server. I don't know what they have improved now that it is showing 1Gbps to you. But Vodafone was the least peered network in terms of Speedtest.net

I have downgraded to 200 Mbps plan.
Only thing I want to say is that my 10 Mbps airtel 4G works much better than my broadband.
Most of the times it takes a minute to load YouTube comments/thumbnails, similar case for many other reputable sites as well

Nothing to do with plan or speed . Start bothering them on twitter or Email nodal officer.

My issue was resolved a few days ago.
Here you go.
I’m very happy now. I
I have seen download as high as 1.5 Gbps multiple times on Fast.com. Upload as high as 1.1+ Gbps on Fast.com.
I great great speeds to 80%+ servers, both local and foreign.
Have great service even during COVID times.
Cheers Airtel!
