Videocon, the consumer durables major, which is making a pitch for direct-to-home (DTH) television market through its media arm Bharat Business Channel, has homed in on Israeli technology firm Gilat Satellite Networks for its foray. Gilat's super encryption technology swung things in its favour.

Gilat Satellite Networks made over half the interactive VSATs last year, that were sold in the world. The Petah Tikva, Israel-headquartered firm also provides satellite back haul solution to Latin America's largest mobile network operator, Vivo. Australia's Optus has also got the firm for its broadband satellite network expansion.

Gilat is active throughout Asia Pacific, working with service providers like Bharti Broadband, HCL Comnet, Tatanet India—a division of Nelco, China Unicom, ChinaSat and Optus. Its new systems are capable of simultaneous handling of multiple satellite networks, traffic encryption and management of private networks.

Gilat's "built-in encryption technology, which ensures the integrity, authenticity and confidentiality of all communications, was chosen after three other contenders pitched for the service.'' Gilat provides VSAT product lines to several markets and also has satellite data delivery, which enable interactive data communications for retail point of sale. The firm also has satellite telephony as also satellite-based internet-access, which incorporates the most advanced IP technologies for real-time audio, video and data.

Videocon CMD Venugopal Dhoot declined to comment, though a senior official said that "officials are reviewing the technology. Price, however, is an issue''.

The idea is to have a DTH project at a cheaper cost than what has been touted till now by Tata Sky and the Subhash Chandra-controlled Dish TV, the two private sector DTH service providers in the country.
