Village Elders approved crime in West Bengal village

Police in India's West Bengal state said Thursday that a young woman has been gang raped on the orders of a village council because she fell in love with a man from a different religion.Sudhakar said the woman said she lost count of how many men raped her during the night-long ordeal that occurred Monday.The West Bengal case is particularly troubling because the alleged rape apparently was sanctioned by a council made up of village elders. Such councils are not legally binding in India, but they are seen as the will of the local community. The councils decide on social norms in the village and in some villages prescribe the way women can dress, or who they can marry. Those who flout the councils risk being ostracized.

A 20-year-old tribal girl was allegedly raped by at least 10 members of a kangaroo court in a Birbhum village on Monday night as punishment for having an affair with a youth from another community. She is in critical condition after the assault and is clinging to life in spite of the rapists stopping her from reaching a hospital.All 13 accused — including the village headman — have been arrested for rape. The girl's boyfriend has also been arrested.TOI spoke to the girl in Suri Hospital on Wednesday evening. Although in severe pain, she feebly said: "I had an affair with a man. We were dragged to a gathering where our community-headman was present. They told me to pay Rs 50,000. When I said I couldn't, they brutalized me." A doctor said she was alive "only because she is a tough tribal girl".Her mother said: "The crime was committed by our own people. They tortured my daughter and dumped her home late at night. We were threatened not to go to police. We tried to go to Bolpur hospital but they stopped us."

This is disgraceful. All those who committed rape and the people of community who ordered the rape should be given death sentence or life imprisonment. There are many such brutal rape incidents in many towns and villages in Bengal. But such cases in small towns and villages are glossed over by media. I remember I read in Outlook there was a village infested with maoists in Bengal, they would rape any woman any time. They'd simply pick up girls/women from their houses and rape them. I dare say Bengal's such condition (not only rape incidents, but Maoism, hooliganism, underdevelopment etc.) is because of Communist politicians and communist mindset of public at large.

West Bengal Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya on Thursday aggressively criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for sitting idle and not reacting to the gang rape of a tribal woman in the state’s Birbhum District.“The chief minister is sitting idle. Women are being tortured and nothing has been done. It is unfortunate that this lady chief minister (Mamata Banerjee) is saying that she is the chief minister of Bengal. That is shameful to us,” he said
