What is the use of the usb slot in the HD Satellite box?

I have got a d2h HD satellite box Model No. 2011. There is a usb slot in the satellite box and I tried to connect my 500gb Seagate external hard drive, except the led blinking in the hard drive I didnt notice anything else. I think it is not possible to record on a normal hd satellite box because there are no extra buttons on the remote control. So can you people tell me why do we have this slot in our box?Thanks.

Its there so that u can view images from ur external storage, which cant be seen thru any other device!
