Xenforo cloud also starts at 60 dollars per month it seems. Though I guess developers are already used to discourse so that might be better option.
Try demo editions if available. Xenforo has a three day demo iirc.
Or you can get managed hosting and manage the forum software yourself.
If a social platform would suffice the purpose instead of a forum... Check mastodon. Mastohost is a managed solution and base plan starts at 6 dollars iirc. But very limited. Higher plan should still be cheaper than 50 dollars per month.
