i had say this.just because every other service provider is bad does not mean i cannot write something about one particular service i actually used. maybe if he go for dish tv, he would have a similar post for them too. i mostly wrote about sify broadband and cursed them because that was the company i was paying to get decent connectivity. i never got one. that does not mean i cannot say it publicly that they suck. :)

The thing is tht he never used Tata Sky... he got it cancelled before activation... and got all the stuff he wrote on his blog from here.... and then he is comparing it with dishtv... now wht logic does tht make?

sushubh makes a point. i wud praise or curse only what i liked or disliked. rest is like non-existent.@hitmani dont think he is comparing with dishtv. he mentioned price differencebecause 1000rs is huge (atleast for middle class family) compared to 300rs.

1000 is more than 300% of 300. a good enough point to complain.

the problem would have been the same if Dish TV was charging 1000 bucks.

airtel charges nada for changing houses. they would do the complete wiring for you free. they would do the wiring in every room in your house for free. and they would do it in every house you ever move to. for free.

i need to have airtel to enter DTH. atleast they would not be beaten by BSNL in terms of bandwidth supply.

i had say, he found too many issues with their service even before he started using their services. the blog post could have been longer if he had actually used their services. i guess, tata sky is lucky that they managed to refund his money back.

I never contested tht he have no right to express his opinion.... But I am only saying tht most of the points he listed doesn't hold any ground... I have also listed my opinion abt all his complains... Most of his complains r just generated from his own head.... and abt the stuff which Tata Sky never said they provide...

Well, that has been a very enlightening discussion, the likes of which we need much more of here.

So hitman, i wait to hear about how well your Tata Sky does in the monsoons...(don't really care who the provider is, just how well DTH can deliver in this situation)

does it rain as hard in Delhi as it does in the south?

that's annual data for the country, looks like ppl in Assam, Bengal & surrounding areas get the worst, if DTH works well there, then i think that would make a water tight argument for DTH.

Its been 5-6 months since I got Tata Sky and I lost signals twice... first time it was some sun outage thing... and second was when it rained very hard here.... It kept on raining very hard for almost 30-40 mins but signal was down for just 5 mins... In light rainfalls it works fine... I am not sure abt how it will perform in those high rainfall recieving areas... Lets wait for monsoon.... :)

U r not allowed to relocate the dish urself... but who is stopping u to move the dish to different angle... Its not ILLEGAL... Now u r worried if u loss reception then y to move it in first place... man if u r so confident of moving the dish urself then u must be confident of getting it back to the position... U can't expect Tata Sky guys to provide u services cos of ur mischiefs...[/b]
This is non-sensical ...why would you move to a diff angle, would you pick up other programs(?), even if you could, the stb would not decode it for you since it only works with Tata.

He said moving the dish (at all) would be in violation of the terms, (whether it is or not reamains to be seen, but i was under the impression he was quoting the T&C's). You have to get a tata tech to do it for you and with that comes the extra payment. Therefore if you change houses you have the Rs.1000 extra charge just for that. So i gather even if you could setup and whatnot, the TOA prohibit you from doing so. I understand if this was not the case then tata or any other provider could clearly use as an incentive over the local cable wallahs since you would have to pay (by default) to get a cable installed to your new place. I feel the extra charge is there to prevent ppl from dicking around with the dish and wasting personnel resources to get it realigned again, but a relocation should defnitely not be considered in the same category.

It would be interesting to know how this is handled abroad. My guess is they won't have a problem with it, for all i know they might even do it for free. Hey you chose to stick with them and they know they will be getting a monthly payment from you. And that is rewarding you for staying with them. To be fair there should only be one installation charge and relocatoins are included as well, how often are you going to shift around, a few times then you eventually settle down.

RE: Rains, if you suffer from heavy rainfall in your area and frequently lose connection, the solution is to demand a larger dish. They wouldn't listen until you pester them continuously. Here's a response from someone writing on my blog:

Been a 'TattaSky' subscriber for 6 months now. At first the service was horrible...had my tattas in my mouth while watching TV...the quality was horrendous, with constant picture freezes. Realized that the Thomson boxes they provided had this flaw whereas the Humax boxes didn't. Had to threaten them that I will withdraw my subscription if they don't rectify. They didn't oblige until I sent a rant to Mr. Kaushik. Now the picture does not freeze.

I stay in Shillong. We have a pretty heavy monsoon season here. At first they gave me a 60cm dish. The picture would conk off at the slightest drop of rain. However, they changed the dish to a 90 (or maybe its a 120cm) dish when I used to complain a lot about the picture freezes. With the old dish, I could manually get the picture to vanish by pouring a glass of water on the dish. Now with the bigger dish, the picture did not freeze the last time there was some torrential rain. I mentioned this so that people know what to do.[/b]

It rains pretty hard in Delhi during the monsoon months. Now, the world cup final is on April 28th. It's not known to rain in Delhi at that time but I was wondering in case it does....

Shillong is an ideal test case :)So, if they use bigger dishes in the case where there are several subscribers that can share the dish, say if you live in an appartment complex, don't plan to relocate, from a technical standpoint, DTH might be the better than cable. That leaves proprietary STBs and price as sticking points.
