I noticed that browsing feels faster on Airtel when compared to TPF(It was the opposite case when I switched to TPF in Jan). I guess TPF has implemented heavy DPI, hence the browsing feels sluggish at times. There's occasional site loading issue with TPF. Airtel is better in this regard.
Overall I am satisfied with the current internet setup, Airtel goes down for a long long time tho. As of now both Airtel and TPF are working fine for me. Pings are slightly better on Airtel when compared to TPF but it's just a difference of 2-5 ms in most cases.
Also Airtel provides me public IPv4 and PPPoE session doesn't expire unless the
router is restarted. In case of TPF it's CGNAT IPv4 with session resetting every few days. I have replaced the
Nokia ONT with
TP-Link XZ000-G3 v1 ONU for Airtel. Doesn't work for TPF, I guess it needs some more authentication other than
GPON SN.
Pings went down further by a few ms when I dialed up via the G3 ONU. Pings on TPF are great as well, almost the same as Airtel.
Airtel is a bit cost effective compared to TPF but I would pay extra for TPF any day for great customer support. TAT for Airtel and TPF is almost the same in my experience, I always received a call from the service engineer in less than 4 hours.
One thing that is wrong with both Airtel and TPF is that they don't provide any "internet only" plans. Airtel just has one plan, 799 pm with 100 Mbps speed. It comes down to 699 pm + taxes for me with the Airtel black bundle(postpaid + fiber).
Similar plan(100 Mbps) on TPF costs 950 pm + taxes with a bunch of OTT crap.
Tata provides download speeds more than the internet plan speed, for example, I get more than 300 Mbps download speed on my 200 Mbps plan while the upload speed is capped to 200 Mbps. On Airtel both upload and download speed are hardcapped now but I think it's fine as it is slightly cheaper than Tata, if you compare monthly plans. Tata offers decent discount and cashback on long term plans tho.
Overall I'd say both ISPs are good and one can't go wrong with any of them, at least for my location, Pimple Saudagar area. YMMV.
I would choose Tata Play Fiber over Airtel for it's reliability and better customer support. For gaming and ping sensitive tasks, Airtel performs slightly better than TPF but the difference is only noticeable if you compare them side by side.
I believe Tata has over provisioned the number of connections here in my area, I have also noticed random slowdowns and packet loss in the peak evening time. Nothing as such for Airtel, either it works flawlessly or it doesn't work at all, nothing in between. In my case, TPF OLT is located around 1km from my apartment while the Airtel OLT is just right across the street.
One more point I missed, loaded latency is a lot less on Airtel compared to TPF. Idk how much difference does it make in day to day usage but something worth mentioning.
