errm. AppleiPhone only has one GSM edition that works with AT&T 3G networks. it does not support T-Mobile 3G networks. so the model on sale in the US market is the same model that is sold in india hardware wise.
There is no such thing as warranty repairs for the iPhone in India. Warranty support in India is the responsibility of the carriers that are selling it here. This is because we don't have any Apple stores here only authorised resellers. If your iPhone is defective or if there is a problem, they will just swap it for a new one. I got mine replaced as the battery on the one I had really sucked. If the iPhone was bought outside India it needs to go back to the country it was purchased for a repair/replacement.
Right now there seems to be only one unlock option right now that a lot of people are using with mixed results. I'm talking about the Gevey Turbo SIM for iPhone 4. Although, it is not a solution that is highly recommended as it involves dialing emergency numbers to activate the unlock. If you decide to try it, do so at your own risk.
I got unlock with Gevey Supreme. The phone works fine, finds the network on its own after going into a no network zone and coming back. I have not faced any serious problems yet, using it for over 3 weeks now. I had also turned Airplane mode when I travelled and turned it off, the phone found the network on its own.

I'm glad it's working well for you. The Gevey Supreme and the more recent Ultra have fewer issues and work better than the older versions. The Gevey option is the only way to unlock a carrier locked iPhone 4 at this time.
I personally do not recommend buying a locked iPhone 4. The biggest drawback is that you will be stuck at iOS 4.3.5 and will not be able to upgrade to iOS 5 which will be released later this year (unless there is another solution found for an iOS 5 unlock).
