Short answer: no. No box "converts" a standard definition broadcast to HD. What an HD will allow, however, is the reception of HD channels, so whatever channels your provider broadcasts in HD will be displayed in HD on your TV, and channels broadcast in SD will be upscaled to fit your screen.

well to b real in airtel u will get worse picture .Tata Sky gives best picture, quality and service. dont leave it. if u believe in my words, well and good, if not u r free but u will regrettata sky has best quality hd box as well as best feature loaded 625 hrs recording capable(which is highest when compared to videocon, reliance which give 200 hrs, airtel -500 hrs) hd dvr

Non HD Channels provided by all the Service providers are upscaled to 1080i. True HD is 1080p, like Movie HD, Discovery HD, Nat Geo HD, etc. The advertisement given by Reliance TV , showcasing that they are providing 250 HD channels is false, since there arent 250 HD channels in India, by any provider. Also max to max there are 10-20 true HD channels. Rest all are upscaled. Also picture quality depends upon your TV settings, keep the aspect ratio to 16:9.
