BTW This Win10 being last OS would be good thing. No need to purchase OS every 2-3 years. I had purchased official Win 7 and later Win 8 as well (at higly discounted price from friend working at MS )

Windows needs activation if you change networking hardware or motherboard or a bunch of other things. Microsoft considers it as a change of machine. You only get free updates till the end of device's life. Which pretty much means the same thing. Change the network card, you have a new machine and bam you get no new updates.

My issue here is that how do I retain access to the installer of the latest OS I am entitled to. Last time I reinstalled Windows... It was a hell experience installing 8.1 directly. Though I read that Microsoft has since then released a new installer that lets you install 8.1 with your 8.0 key.

Aa far as I remember, there used to be a limit on the number of allowed changes to a hardware before Windows can call it a complete change of machine. Used to be around 5. You could change upto 5 components without requiring a new license.

Is this true for retail versions? Especially 7 and below? Because I remember reading at MS Site about what to do if you want to upgrade to a newer machine and about how we should be unintsalling windows in old one etc...

I have windows 7 on virtual machine (original CD came with laptop)! So I can move it anywhere!

I changed cpu, contacted MS support over the net, somehow gave the wrong Product code(one on an existing machine), they activated it by using remote desktop. Now it gets automatically activated with a fresh install. Win 8 btw

The irritating thing is reinstalling win 8.1
