Due to unavailability of a decent broadband in my area, I thought to explore the wireless providers. Tata Plug2Surf, Reliance Wi-Max and Airtel Data card are the ones I ave got to hear about. Any clue on which one to go for though I understand its still not the time for wireless access in India.
Use BSNL or MTNL if u r living in delhi or mumbai.they provide the best plans.

I got this speed because Airtel network is pretty much unused in the area where I live. If network is congested, voice calls gets priority over GPRS and you will be lucky to get even 40 kbps.

I have used GPRS/EDGE from Airtal and it worked fine. I got around 200kbps over wireless.

Well.. i had also used GPRS/EDGE long time back.. 3 yrs back.. of Airtel..
at that time speeds were slow..

3G has not been rolled by Airtel/Hutch/Idea/BSNL/MTNL.. although Reliance has started somthing in south circles..

I was under impression that airtel caps the spped at 100kbps (Kilobits) at their end... although ur PC might show the speed at 115 Kbps... i used to get speeds of approx 7-8KBps(KiloBytes per sec)..

Although my phone was an EDGE model of Nokia...

Netfreak or others have you guys gotten more speeds ???

Yes, I live in Delhi . Are you using BSNL or MTNL wireless internet ? Do you get good speeds with it ?
I don't care what plans and what prices as long as the wireless internet speed is good !

i used to get speeds of approx 7-8KBps(KiloBytes per sec).
Even that is tolerable for wireless internet !
Although my phone was an EDGE model of Nokia.
hmmm...... I'm not talking about mobile phone internet.
To be precise, I was thinking about getting the Airetel Wireless USB modem internet for my Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop. Airtel website says that they offer both EDGE and GPRS internet.
hmmm..... there is an Airtel Showroom near my house....... methinks I'll head over there and hope they will give me a Demo !

I got around 200 kbps with Airtel's PCMCIA card. When I put the same SIM on Nokia 6020, I got around 150 kbps. Thats because this phone does not supports all slots of EDGE.

I think both "Using mobile as GPRS/CDMA modem or a PCMCIA/USB modem" work the same way as long as phone supports ALL kinds of EDGE configurations.

Speed will depend primarily on network.

yes mtnl and bsnl provide WI-Fi internet.they have time based and volume based plans.
speeds are upto 2mbps.
here are the plans for mtnl delhi.
here u can have a look at the tarriffs.MAHANAGAR TELEPHONE NIGAM LTD.

You need to be in one of MTNL's HotSpot to use WiFi. That makes is useless since that would be limited to very few locations in city. GPRS/EDGe OTOH are available throughout the city.

Absolutely correct !
abtom, I was asking about the wireless internet provided by MTNL/BSNL using USB modem or PCMCIA card. Wi-Fi internet is useless, unless one is lucky enough to be living in one of the hotspots!

I c a lot of interest amongst ppl for wireless which is pretty obvious. As per my research during the last few days, I have got to know abt a bunch of diff mechanisms for the wireless connectivity. I guess there is some confusion around these. So just thought to share some basic info on these various mechanisms. Experts, plz correct me if I m wrong anywhere so that ppl dont get misleading information. - Wireless data cards provided by Airtel, Hutch, Tata Indicom and Reliance. They cost in the range of 3-7 K and the plans are all pretty much similar. Max speed u can expect is 100-110 kbps I suppose although they claim it to be arnd 140-150 kbps.- GPRS and GPRS/EDGE connectivity thru cell ph. The phone has to be GPRS n EDGE compatible for this. Although I think the speed with this will again be not more than what u get in data card, but as netfreak said u could probably get better in not so crowded areas.- Wi-Fi internet provided by BSNL, MTNL, Tata and may be other telcos as well. But that is only accesible in some hot spots in Tier I kind of cities. So something that high class honchos might be connecting to while they are on the move.

You can add fourth option, that is EDGE/GPRS through data card. Thats what I use.Reliance/TATA/MTNL/BSNL give you data cards based on CDMA. Speed is pretty low with these cards (114 kbps is max, 40 - 60 kbps can be expected). Airtel/Hutch give you data cards based on GSM+GPRS/EDGE. These cards have a SIM and can give you speeds up to 233 kbps in theory. One thing is common in all cards/phones. Speed is as good or bad as network load.
