I do... And its a painful process explaining to friends & relatives about why cant I/friend get them that shiny new iPhone for $200-$300....

The iPhone 4 is available for 1/4th of the price in the US. And this is the reason why I would like to purchase the same.

Since I face network issues related to GSM networks at my home, I use Reliance CDMA. However the CDMA handsets in the market are really bad, and so I would love to have the iPhone 4.

Can the iPhone CDMA from the US market be unlocked and used in India?

The iphone 4 (CDMA) doesn't have a sim card tray slot. So forget about the iphone 4.

The best part comes when they tell me how Mr.XYZ was able to do it & I tell them its illegal, I have a tough time convincing it is so & explaining why is it so

Unlocked iPhones are as costly abroad as in India, but operators sell locked phones in US/UK for really cheap price (prepaid) with condition that phone must be used for certain period (12/24 months) on their network and also minimum amount of recharge/Topup also done for this period. Once this period of usage is over, we get get device unlocked from operator officially. However people get this locked phones, and hack/jailbreak to unlock that phone (losing warranty), and then they transfer/bring to India :)(this is I guess illegal to do)

I have had friends/colleagues who have to return to India before the contract period & they pay some charges & have it officially unlocked & bring it here (iPhone/other phones)

those charges are around USD 150 from what i remember. though they can be smaller for devices that are closer to contract expiry period.

yes. jailbreaking is legal in usa. but breaking your contract would be illegal in any country.

Yes... It depends upon where you are in terms of contract period
