For Gmail I have the option to customize synchronization settings.

All messages, New Headers, New messages only.

It doesn't show any such option for Yahoo!

Yahoo probably is taking time indexing and that is timing out ur mail client.Try increasing timeout setting to maximum in "advanced" setting of ur mail account in windows live.

Actually. A better suggestion would be to let Gmail import all your emails from Yahoo and then sync it with your computer using IMAP.

setup mail import here.

use a new account if you do not want to mess up your regular one.

gmail would automatically download all the messages over a period of time.

when everything is imported, use gmail (pop or imap) to download it to your machine

windows live mail has pop support. you can use it! or import them to gmail and use gmail's features to download mail after today.

Even if I download them to Gmail first, same thing is going to happen again. Live will download all the freaking mails (I guess).

what i am saying is. let gmail backup your messages. and once it is done, turn on pop/imap and get future mails. google allows you to download mails after today.
