It was shot that way apparently. The movie is not cropped but that is the full-frame. No idea yet though about the why of it.

Some updates regarding the weird choice of 4:3 AR for the movie.
  • In a nutshell, Snyder thought the taller format was more complimentary to the taller, larger than life heroes of DC.
  • They put 70 million dollars into the full-frame restoration.
  • The entire movie would be presented in 1.43:1 format, not just select scenes.
  • Snyder shot the movie with spherical “regular” lenses, not anamorphic. That’s why it’s more square sized.
  • Full frame of the film negative is in this AR.
  • Right now there is no 16:9 version of the Snyder Cut. If there is, it will require post work to ensure all of the framing is correct.
  • This AR is also an ode to the traditional IMAX (1.43:1) screen theatres. In a traditional IMAX theatre, this movie will play perfectly with no shifting ARs through scenes. But traditional IMAX theatres are disappearing as most of them have replaced by digital IMAX theatres (1.90:1). So this film would have the top and bottoms sliced off to fit the screen to avoid pillar boxing (black bars on the side).

And for me, TIL that 4:3 is an IMAX ratio. I wonder how many IMAX theatres in India are 4:3 and how many digital. Probably all digital considering we got IMAX pretty late.
