Zee group backed Dish TV has increased its transponder capacity from seven to nine on its Dutch satellite NSS-6.:yahoo:

Bharti's DTH plans are now on track. The company will be launching its DTH services by January-February, 2008

The Direct-to-Home (DTH) services have received a shot in the arm with the successful launch of Insat-4CR. Forty DTH transponders will now be available for use by the existing five DTH players.

DTH players will now be able to carry 520-600 television channels over the next 12-18 months. So, the shortage of transponders that DTH players were facing is all but over.

A transponder is a device fitted on a satellite that receives, amplifies, and retransmits television or communication signals back to earth. One transponder can carry 12 to 15 channels.

New entrants like Bharti Telemedia, Reliance Bluemagic and Sun Direct have been able to get hold of 19 transponders between them while the current DTH players Tata Sky and Dish TV have together got 21 transponders.

According to sources, INSAT-4CR is carrying six transponders for Bharti Telemedia while the remaining six will be used for communication services by VSNL, Railways and National Informatics Centre.

Consolidated list of channels allowed to be carried by Cable operators / Multi system operators /DTH licencees in India (In alphabetical order) as on 31.7.2007


Applications of a total of 99 television channels by 59 companies were at different stages of scrutiny in 31 July last for permission to uplink from within the country.

Information and Broadcasting ministry sources said no time frame could be given about issue of permission to these channels as they also required inter-ministerial comments.

According to Ministry sources, a total of 31 private satellite TV channels have been permitted to uplink during the present calendar year up to July 31. In comparison, a total of 25 and 37 channels had been allowed to uplink in 2005 and 2006 respectively.

Earlier in May, Information and Broadcasting minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi had told Parliament that a total of 222 private satellite television channels had been given permission to uplink from India as on 30 April apart from six channels uplinked from abroad which have been permitted to downlink in India. In addition to this, 54 foreign TV channels had been provisionally permitted to downlink in India.

At that time, proposals of 71 private satellite channels from 52 different companies were awaiting permission to uplink from within the country.
