It's like reservation. It looks good on paper but in real world it hurts everyone. An internet inside a walled garden would be just as good as a TV with one way communication where the message is controlled by the big media. Internet has worked so well because it empowers the common man. A small company can take on a big giant as the field is equal. A walled garden ensures that people with resources can get an extra advantage over startups hurting everyone who is connected to the internet.
If you do not see this as a problem... I don't know if anything can give you a solider reason to oppose free basics. You hurt the larger web by limiting access to a smaller web to a vast majority of customers in India.
Free basics is not going to be used by only the very poor. People without internet access on their phones would also turn it on and get access to a limited version of the web because as the defenders of this program say 'some access is better than no access'. Which means that they would access Facebook for social, Whatsapp for communication, and other partners for their individual services. There would be little to no competition and the rest of the web would lose access to this market which would grow exponentially once it is approved by TRAI.
i also saw a few tweets from people from neighboring countries who were shown this message.
also saw some tweets where people reported that facebook automatically submitted responses from accounts of dead people.
