Combine tata connection with local cable ISP

Hello Everyone,

I just got an additional connection for my home. i have an existing 40mbps connection from my cable operator and that is a pppoe setup so terminated in my router.

Now i have got the tata broadband at 100mbps i get around 130mbps up/down and possibility to take their 300 mpbs connection, I want to have them as a single point for my home.

Current setup is

Cable Internet >>> D-Link wireless router (dhcp)( wireless is off) >>> Apple extreme in bridged mode >>>> Home devices

Tata internet >>> Nokia PON router Wirleess >> home

What i want to do :
1. Have a broadband failover
2. only one wireless SSID at home


So i thought ill need one of these Mikrotik RouterBoard RB750Gr3 or Ubiquiti Networks EdgeRouter X

So connection would be Tata and cable >>>> Mikrotik/ubiquiti >>> Apple extreme

In terms of performance and ease of use which do you guys recommend., i have a lot of devices that need to be on wifi and in the same network like lights, switches, fans, speakers, door cameras, firesticks, airplay, mobiles, ipads etc ,

Any help would be much appreciated.

I would recommend Edgerouter X for ease of use, but Mikrotik RouterOS has a steep learning curve compared to EdgeOS.
Performance-wise both have similar specs, RB750Gr3 would perform much better than ERX due to the two 1Gbps link between CPU and Switch chipset.

Do note that ERX can only do up to 150-200Mbps with QoS enabled.

If you are looking for Mikrotik, try the hap ac2, includes wireless as well.

Else you can also opt for a good router which supports OpenWRT, you can easily do multi WAN with failover or any custom config with it.

There are good TP-Link variants which support OpenWRT.

thanks for the quick reply, learning curve is fine, i like to tinker around these things. i know a few things around basic networking so i would assume it should be ok. the erx thats a good point you mentioned. would be a bottleneck when i updated the connection. qos would be important as i want a few devices ( Amazon cube and android tvs) to get a priority for the streaming of online 4k content.

@varkey the hap ac2 is bit beyond budget not looking to spend more than 6.5k besides already have two Apple extreme routers and a apple express my speakers connect to them via airplay

I have narrowed down to this Mikrotik RB450Gx4 router board. Can anyone point me the best place to buy this from. thanks

Try Multilinkonline.com they're the authorised distributor for Mikrotik in India.

@kane That would be more expensive than the hap ac2. Probably 10k with case etc.

Yes, as @varkey said it would cost around 10k with case, router board alone costs 8.7k incl GST
