Router recommendations for Airtel 1 Gbps plan?

Just got an Airtel 1 Gbps plan, luckily the team was in the same building setting up another connection. So all the wiring and hardware was all set in 2 hours. The activation is supposed to happen by tomorrow.

I am on Youbroadband 200 mbps right now and Dir 825 ac 1200 router works great, but for a 1 Gbps speed, I had to spend a lot of time today looking up a router that will actually come close to delivering 1 Gbps over wifi, heck anything over 800 mbps and I will be happy.

Which router do you guys use for a 1 gbps connection? What's your experience been like?

Discussion on this thread is getting mixed up between routing speed and wifi speed. We need to first establish that the router is able to do routing at 1gbps. Anything to do with wifi comes after that.

@buggybuggy is indicating that the Nokia ONT can ROUTE only upto 600mbps.

Yeah tried that, results similar to Dir 825, For most Airtel user plans, the max people buy is a 300 mbps connection. So they never realize that the Nokia they are given will max out at 500-600 mbps.

What mobiles are you using. All the current gen mobiles say a year old also support WiFi 6.

iPhone 10 and Macbook Pro 2019 16 inch.

Yes Nokia GPON given by Airtel has 1 gbps LAN support.

What's the use of 1gbps lan support when they can route around 600mbps only max.

That's just a limitation of the puny cpu that these ont's have. They sell them by saying it supports upto 1.2 Gbps throughout but it can never achieve that in real world.

I suggest you complain with airtel saying you are only getting 600mbps (imo you should get 800-900 mbps for a gigabit connection, atleast on airtel speedtest server).

And this exactly one the reasons why we need to have the bridge mode working on the Nokia ONT. In bridge mode, the onus of routing is on the downstream device.

@buggybuggy I think you should push Airtel to get the bridge mode working on the Nokia. Demonstrate to them that the ONT is incapable of routing at 1gbps. If you don't bridge the Nokia ONT, it will remain a bottleneck and it doesnt matter what you put downstream of it.

@rajil.s Assuming bridge mode works on Nokia or they change to Huawei to get bridge mode working, will it be able to send at 1gbps to the customers downstream router over lan cable. Also which routers support 1gbps routing. Thanks.

@Venkata Ramesh Chandra V In bridge mode, the Nokia is just acting as a switch (and a fiber to ethernet media converter). It should perform much better. This can do gigabit routing in mini-itx form factor. Otherwise if you have an old computer lying around with Intel NICs, they can be made into routers.

Here is a cheap solution.

• iperf3 ~890 Mbps (LAN-to-WAN)
• iperf3 -R ~910 Mbps (WAN-to-LAN)

can most ONTs handle Gigabit atleast in bridge mode? I'm not sure because there aren't much or any ONT reviews on the internet

@JB700 Atleast the Nokia router will be less stressed when it does not need to route.
