Wow putting all blame on upa. Such a biased article. 12 yrs out of those are under nda govt.

All i know is i cant get mtnl landline at 100-150rs with free unlimited calls even paying upfront for year. While i can avail same on mobile even when mob cos pay termination charges.
Many ppl wanted to keep mtnl landline in past but cheap plans were never an option. Why? Because cheap plans will led them stop milking of govt/psu cos who are forced to buy mtnl landline at ripoff decade old rates.
Adsl was diff story when unbundling was opposed.
Vdsl plans are still rip off and acc to mtnl employees was only for elite.

The employees attitude towards FTTH was also the same. I was told by the SDE for my area that it was for 'Good Customers'. BTW the article does say when the decay started & all govts were at fault. The death knell was part of MMS.

For them at that time Good Customer meant businesses who could be milked for 1.25 lakhs per month. He even told me the name of which businesses who paid that much. When mtnl started mobile services they had gone to govts companies & got a lot of customers but at the same time told everyone that the big wigs in the company were in the pay of 'so & so' & will screwups the service. What an USP to give people who are queuing up for the sim.

Their entry into the mobile space with CDMA mobile phones AND broadband now are both backdoor entries which is not mentioned in the article.
CDMA mobile as provided by MTNL was WLL and perfectly legal. CDMA with multiple service numbers bundled to the same device to provide backdoor roaming, as provided by Mukesh Ambani's Reliance India Mobile, with active backing of Pramod Mahajan, was the real backdoor entry.
