What's the minimum recharge to send SMS on Vodafone Idea/Airtel/Reliance Jio/BSNL?

I told my mother to use the frequently used number for banking, but I guess she selected the other number for security concerns. Makes sense, but costs more money.

Does Airtel also require us to recharge the number with a specific pack to be able to send SMS?
 
Yes... Airtel, Vi, Jio and now even BSNL too requires validity packs to keep your number active. The private operators go a step further and limit outgoing SMS on their lowest denomination packs. Read the subtext when you recharge carefully and you'll be able to figure out the pack which allows outgoing SMS as well.
 
Airtel 99 i think allows sms now. Vi needs 128 and that too gives low talk value or something.

I recharged bsnl for 107 for 50 days validity and came with no sms, but i don't mind adding a 20-30 rupee talktime , just to send a few sms for UPI etc.
 
As a secondary SIM, BSNL would be the best bet. Taking a secondary SIM of Jio would entail a monthly recharge of ₹155 to keep it active. You could recharge yearly, but even then you wouldn't save a lot doing so.

Surprised to say this but among the private operators, Airtel offers the lowest denomination plan with paid outgoing SMS at ₹99 /28 days. Vi comes second with a variety of plans ranging from 28 days to 31 days, but all of them starting from >₹120. Jio's plans are the most expensive @₹155/ 28 days.
 
From getting an good ARPU perspective what jio and other providers do/are doing makes sense.

However it feels they are giving too much for too less to a few and asking others to bear the cost.
