I recently bought a 32 inch Samsung LCD. Though the Tata Sky box has a picture aspect ratio setting; there is no change when the setting is changed to 16:9 instead of 4:3. The picure still appears stretched and distorted.
When the picture setting on the LCD TV is set to 4:3, then only is the picture distortion free. But then there are two black bars on the left and right. I think, only channels broadcast in 16:9 aspect ratio (including HD channels) will be distortion free on a widescreen (16:9) TV. Movies played from the DVD player (after changing the setting in the DVD player to 16:9) also plays screenfull; in the correct aspect ratio.
As of now in India, if you buy LCD/LED widescreen TV and you primarily watch only TV programmes, then you are in for distorted, stretched picurte viewing!
