NEW DELHI: Telecom regulator Trai on Wednesday asked service providers to specify minimum speed of broadband plan, which must be atleast 256 Kbps.

In a statement, the regulator said it has already written to all the service providers not to use words like "up to" while specifying minimum speed of the plan. The service providers have also been asked to bring to the notice of subscribers the definition of broadband while offering high speed internet connections.

To set roadmap for defining broadband, Trai also released a status paper on 'Broadband Speed' on Tuesday. The paper has analysed broadband speed, as defined in various countries, the prevailing environment and impact of growth of broadband on the economy.

lol, this is posted a few places and in other forums too... i think either the posters or reporters have assumed that removal of "upto" means that the "upto 2 mbps" will become full 2 mbps plans too... typical way for third rate news media to spread misinformation and start rumours...

Third Rate? Times of India??Its the highest selling news paper in the World.

Okay, so it's the highest selling (and one of the most third rate) newspaper in the world :P

From what i read TRAI still wants minimum speed to be 256 kbps for broadband and that should not be upto . So no upto 256 kbps packages in name of broadband

Absolutely right !!! The media (inc the the 3rd rate paper :), referred to) has no analytical capability and no clue about what is being talked about. They simply dish out the same nonsense, which probably was given to them as a press release/handout.

TRAI is upto its usual practice of not doing anything to resolve the real issues. Why should ISPs be "warned" about their misleading ads ? It has been known from the beginning what "broadband" is in India.

They should have penalised ALL the ISPs for fleecing the Indian consumers.

I was also shocked to read that TRAI has said there are "very few" applications available/used, requiring more than 256 kbps speed and hence there is no need to redefine "broadband".

This is so absurd !!!!!

cheers.

Don't just read, also reconnect it with what you know, then you'll realize its applicable to all plans including 2mbps. Brains are supposed to be used.MTNL and BSNL have been advised to provide 2mbps broadband speeds and they proclaim that they're compliant with the order. The truth is they're not as they're only providing 'up to 2mbps' speeds. Now if they're asked to display correct broadband speeds, do you really think in their right mind they would want to backtrack on their claims and display a speed lower than 2mbps??As TRAI said 'up to' is gone and gone with it are MTNL and BSNL's claims. And by the way, The Times of India is the best, that's why people spend money on it.

Times of India is rubbish, and that's why people spend money on it.
