I'm thinking of buying a higher capacity hard disk, a 320 or 500 GB one. I've heard that these HDDs slow down your computer. At present I've 1 GB RAM on a P-4 3.0 Ghz, and I am thinking of adding another 1 GB - would it solve the problem of the computer slowing down? All those who do have such HDDs, what is your experience with them? And how exactly have you fitted them? There are the portable ones, but they are too costly, and there are the internal ones, but I just came to know of another method, a USB method, where the USB pin or whatever it is called costs like rs. 400, and then you can plug in your normal (internal type) HDD SATA by USB, and remove it and carry it around whenever you want. A portable 500 GB one would cost around 8000 rs., while I've enquired of the price of an internal one here (in Ahmedabad), and it is somewhere around 3,400 rs (all the others whom I asked were quoting 5000 rs. prices) - now if I add that USB pin to this internal one, within 4000 rs. I would be able to get a portable HDD. This is what my computer guy has told me - he himself has connected a 320 GB SATA in this manner. If there are people on the forum who have done the same - does downloading from the internet to the USB HDD have the same speed?I'd really appreciate some help here.Thanks.

a portable 500GB drive should cost around 4200 rupees. get that. do not download data to it directly. move all the stuff to it which is not required on your primary hard drive.my old P4 became very slow after i put on it multiple hard drives. i cant say if putting a secondary 500GB disk could be a problem.

Whats the size of your current hard disk ? If its above 80 GB, you can go for the external one. Maintain a drive of say 40 GB on current HD just for downloading. As and when it fills, you can transfer all the stuff at once to the external HD.2 TB hard disks also launched in India. It costs around 14k

i dont think it will slow down your pc, alteast not too much if at all.

depends on your needs, as you said you need for torrent downloads an internal one might be better. if you need for backup and portability, an external one would be preferable. but keep in mind the big external drives need a separate power supply.

there are 2 types of portables, small ones that have a 2.5" laptop hard disk and big ones that have 3.5" deskptop hard disks. the smaller ones dont need an external power supply. however these are costlier and only come in a max size of 500gb. i think the dealer that quoted 8000 was for this drive. the bigger ones come in all sizes like 500gb,750gb,1tb.

my suggestion is get an internal 500gb hard disk. if you feel that an external one would be better, you can buy a hard disk casing with which you can use it as an external drive connecting to usb.

for internal drives, i would say just wait for a week or so. seagate has launched the new 7200.12 series which is a very fast and good drive. else if you need it soon, get a western digital 500 or 640gb. in any case avoid 7200.11 series of seagate.

What exactly is wrong with the 7200.11 series? And how do we know the 7200.12 series won't have the same problems, if they are so new?

My present HD is 80 GB; wouldn't it be wearing out the hard disk unnecesarily if I first download everything to the 80 GB one and then transfered it to the bigger one?

7200.11 had some random lockup issues , although it was fixes in the new firmware , sellers might still have the old stock7200.12 is fine because they have fixed the problem , it is the first single platter 500GB drive because of which it is blazingly fastbut TBH if you are only downloading speed doesnt matter that much , buy the harddrive which offers you the lowest price/gb , AFAIK WD 750 Gb green series drives are awesome VFM

well if you download directly to the larger hard disk, that would wear the hard disk as well.

the idea here is that, if you wear the larger hard disk more, it would be more prone to failing sooner. if it does fail, you lose all the data (unless backups are there ofcourse).

but with the 80gb hard disk, if you just keep OS and installed softwares on that and use it for torrent downloads, then you would prolong the life of the larger hard disk. ofcourse it will wear the 80gb, but since there is only OS and programs on it, you dont lose any data in case of failure.
