I'm thinking of buying a higher capacity hard disk, a 320 or 500 GB one. I've heard that these HDDs slow down your computer. At present I've 1 GB RAM on a P-4 3.0 Ghz, and I am thinking of adding another 1 GB - would it solve the problem of the computer slowing down? All those who do have such HDDs, what is your experience with them? And how exactly have you fitted them? There are the portable ones, but they are too costly, and there are the internal ones, but I just came to know of another method, a USB method, where the USB pin or whatever it is called costs like rs. 400, and then you can plug in your normal (internal type) HDD SATA by USB, and remove it and carry it around whenever you want. A portable 500 GB one would cost around 8000 rs., while I've enquired of the price of an internal one here (in Ahmedabad), and it is somewhere around 3,400 rs (all the others whom I asked were quoting 5000 rs. prices) - now if I add that USB pin to this internal one, within 4000 rs. I would be able to get a portable HDD. This is what my computer guy has told me - he himself has connected a 320 GB SATA in this manner. If there are people on the forum who have done the same - does downloading from the internet to the USB HDD have the same speed?I'd really appreciate some help here.Thanks.

ooops, this week i baught internal seagate, 500gb for 3.2k. And its 7200.11 series. What are the issues i may face with this one ? I have yet not started using it. But i have broken the seal of the pack.

7200.11 has some firmware issues.

i have a 500GB of the same series. but i have not faced any problems with it.

but it is on my backup machine not the primary one. so i do not use it much.

google for details. a previous firmware patch was somewhat buggy and increased the problems :P

just go to seagate website and check your serial no. if your hard disk is affected, then download the firmware and update your hard disk with it.

the firmware fixes the problem and no problems after that.

yeah they had released a patch which screwed the hdd even more. :P but they removed that as soon as they realized it and introduced a new patch.

@sushubh - have you checked your serial no?

I'm also planning to get a 250 or 500 GB internal hard drive of Seagate and since I saw this thread I wanted to ask one thing. My present motherboard has Ultra ATA controller and the Barracuda 7200.12 series of Seagate uses Serial ATA controller. Can I still connect those kinds of hard drive with my motherboard? Or do I have to go with older hard drives of Seagate (Ultra ATA interface)?

Well, I have both 500GB and 1 TB USB external Seagate Freeagent drives and till now dint find any problems. I guess its better to have external HDD for storage as it automatically shuts down itself if its not being used. This increases the life of the drive.

Thanks i just did as directed on the site.
While it was updating, pc got shutdown before i could read the completion message. I mean there was some message, but stays hardly for a second and pc shuts down. I wonder if it is normal.

Is there any way to confirm my firmware was updated successfully ? How do i check the firmware version ?

hmm. i have not checked my serial number yet :(
better to check it. you dont wanna end up starting your pc one fine day and come to know that your hard drive doesnt get detected.

one poor guy on another forum had shut down his pc just to flash the new firmware for his hdd. but when he started his pc again, no hdd detected. was a bit late. had to rma his hdd. although the seagate website does mention somewhere that they provide free data recovery for people affected with this problem, i dont think they are doing that.
