Pakistan did not renew his passport, so he couldn't extend his visa in India. He applied for citizenship on humanitarian grounds, and Indian govt accepted.
I hope this does not create trend with other Pakistani artists and players (specially Cricket) who also start seeking citizenship in India. Shoaib Akhtar could be first person doing so
