Looks like airtel is still testing 3G network and finding bugs and fixing them. So airtel doesn't know when to launch 3G. That's why there is no announcement on the dates yet.

I too got the same mail

From the mail it clearly says "Airtel has launched new technology services like 3G". It is 100% wrong information from Airtel. Or this mail has been pre compiled based on the assumption of Dec end launch. In both case Airtel slowly loosing its bond with customers.

Airtel actually has its whole 3G promotion gotten off the very wrong foot and then, it slowly but surely, put that foot in its mouth. First the prolonged labour of its 3G services: When it started its 3G campaign, it piped everybody's interest and as slowly months rolled by, the interest turned sour. Now, it was just a huge exercise of pissing a lot of people off. Good going Airtel. Secondly, their website was all about, 'what is 3G', 'How is it different from 2G', 'Will your mobile support 3G' kind of useless information. People don't go to Airtel's site to gain any 'knowledge' about a technology. There are many better places to get educated on 3G. Instead, they should have involved their most loyal customers into some decision making process, and it would have been great if they had given out some indication about their pricing. Instead, their whole idea of 'interactive' was a few flash movies, just like Tata Docomo's utterly useless 3G site. In short, Airtel thinks we are suckers. Uneducated fools who need to be told '3G will help you make video calls'. Wow! Probably Airtel thinks that its EARLIEST adopters of 3G will be villagers who haven't heard of 3G yet. Thats their intelligence about their target Market. Go figure.

Why are people so eager for the launch of 3G by Airtel which will of course provide crappy service at overpriced rates? Their Edge network was not functional in most parts of Delhi as late as mid-2008. Most trans-Yamuna areas and all of Punjabi bagh, Pitampura, Rohini, Janak Puri and Paschim Vihar got Edge network in 2009 only. That is over 50% of the population in Delhi. How can anyone expect them to provide coverage beyond central Delhi in the starting? Even MTNL had much better coverage of their Edge network in Delhi in 2005.

well think of it this way. they are the market leaders. they set the standards for others to beat. their pricing structure would put pressure on the rivals to beat. if airtel prices are good... you can bet that other service providers would have to do better than them. that's why airtel's launch is the most crucial of all the other 3g launches.
