i agree laxmin. airtel's silence on the 3g launch is really killing me now. i have been an airtel subscriber for 6 years now (although different cities) and did not even think about moving away but their silence is really challenging me to do so. i guess airtel being the market leader (its only because they had the first mover advantage) will suffer the most from MNP if they keep on keeping everyone in limbo about the launch of 3g services which ideally should have happened years ago!i am sure when they do launch 3g services, the prices would be prohibitive for the average user and the shitty fair usage policy would further dampen the spirits of the power user.right now, bsnl/mtnl is offering a fantastic offer under MNP which seems very lucrative (atleast to me). they have waived almost every kind of fee for a new joinee and their 3g tarriff is just awsome.if airtel keep its tounge tied for another 2 weeks, i am moving to mtnl.

Let me clarify:

A good service is NOT all about having a great infrastructure or latest equiptment. It is about SATISFYING your customer's genuine expectations IN TIME.

I have been a loyal airtel customer for over 8-9 years now (right from the time they launched Touchtel landline in my city in 2002). I have seen them grow and I have contributed to their grown in not-a-insignificant way.
My broadband Internet bills during 2003-2005 used to be over 8000 Rs per month, excluding telephone call charges.

They were the first to increase the speeds up to 1, 2, 4 and 8 Mbps. WIth the bandwidth on demand feature, they were the peak of innovation.

and then $hit happened. They lost the plot. The 1 million customer mark went up to their heads and screwed the axons up. Grey matter turned white.

When they won the 3G spectrum, they could have ANNOUNCED THEIR PRICING /TARIFF PLANS FOR 3G.

It might have made sense to their feeble minds to wait till the launch to announce the tariff, but then, airtel was supposed to cater to the IMPATIENT. To those who need speed and they needed it yesterday.

Now, most AIRTEL customers are left in a limbo. When 3G will launch and whether the tariff would be prohibitive for home unlimited usage are big questions.

Even if BSNL has the most clueless dorky engineers who can't put out a decent tariff card that doesn't make customers want to pull their eyes out of their sockets, they got 3G.

Their 3G is no doubt flaky. No doubt their uptime record is like the worst on this planet, except probably for Somalia perhaps... yet. They. Got. 3G.

AND. The. CHEAPEST. price.

Rs. 4200 for 6 Months (700Rs/Month), Unlimited. NO fair usage policy. All India Roaming... now Whats 700 Rs / Month? Nothing! I am sure many of you pay that much for your landline voice calls.

When Airtel will launch its service. It will try to squeeze milk out of your white teeth, thinking its white coz of milk inside. Thats Airtel for you. You will be paying with and through your teeth literally. They will charge in triple digits composed of 9's. Thats their favourite number: 9 & multiples of 9. And then, will come the other concubine: 500 Mb Bandwidth. or some equally damn number that will let you barely let you watch a Movie Trailer.

That service maybe great for you. But for me, I need raw speed now and i can't wait for another day in uncertanity. After all, even if Airtel does pull its head from between its legs and proposed a decent reasonable tariff, I will be switching over to it in 3 months.

So its BSNL for now. Time to kiss the frog.

Well said. Today spoke the same to Airtel CC Chennai. They clearly said we don't know the date. Anyway we will launch soon. Also they said CUG customer can not use MNP directly. They have to come out of CUG and wait for 90 days then apply for MNP.

guys this mail has just come 10 min back from airtel.
if my understanding is accurate from mailer, the is launch is probably next weekhttps://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#inbox/12dae34fd91a934f

sorry guys, cant upload image attachment, it is cropped into various sections and not fitting as whole in imgur.com
nyways i have just quoted what they had emailed me.

get set...
airtel 3G is coming soon to Bengaluru

words like COMING SOON has lost its actual sense. they have been telling coming soon from months together. you never know they would launch next week and it would be surprise to us inspite of receiving the mailer from them.. forget coming soon, words like SHORTLY have been used for services which are launched in 2 months time.

i feel petty on these corporate communication chaps! poor english and should learn some!

guys, one more optimistic news , airtel 3G wap portal is by default active for all users without going to special link as was in the earlier case by sending msg and clicking link. definatly 3G launch is within week

Guys..please discuss abt Airtel 3G in other thread. Why multiple threads for same topic? Mod/Admin can lock/merge this thread.

@laxmin
Very VERY true.

I have been using BSNL 3G ever since it was out. Their tariffs are the best and the cheapest. But, whats the whole point when you dont have the signal most of the times and if you do, the download speeds dont go more than 30kBps?

Of course, there ARE times it goes until 300+kBps, but thats hardly any cream biscuit to pacify my needs.

Torrents are super fast, Youtube SUCKS, browsing is as slow as a 256kbps connection. I have no frickin clue what the issue is.

Oh yeah...Airtel launching 3G on monday.

BSNL is having some teething Issues I heard. There are on it, I hope - Incompetent they surely are and it shows.
Something definitely is better than nothing.

My idea is to retain whatever DSL we have now (albeit, changed to a cheaper plan) for browsing and light downloading.
The BSNL 3G CONSISTENTLY gives 1-3 Mbit/sec speed for torrents (provided you got solid signals in your area), if not for ordinary http data.

Ran some tests, found that after the fifth hop at VSNL Mumbai, there is a heavy packets drop of upto 80% for http data.. kind of a vortex sucking 'em in. Dunno how and why. Probably they have a sick router thereabouts wetting its pants anticipating Airtel's 3G launch :)

Anyways, 3G isn't that great a medium for broadband anyways, unlike WiMax.

I am using one of my new BSNL 3G (4200 rupees, 6 mths) SIM on a Older desktop running Jolicloud with rtorrent that acts as my mail download server :) > hooked up to my media server and I just finished catching up a few episodes of soap.

If Airtel had announced its prices, I would have been in a better position to decide - what they call, the 'Informed Decision'. Now, my decision to go over to BSNL was kinda forced. I don't care about the launch date, only about being able to make a decision whether to stay on Airtel or if the wait would be unjustified and regrettable.
