This article seems to be a PR exercise (as is the norm now), since it wrongly mentions that Vodafone will launch commercial 3G services in the next 3 months. Last year, it's on record that Vodafone would launch 3G within Q1 2011. The fact is they will surely launch 3G before the World Cup to cash in on streaming video etc.

In fact, Airtel 3G has got delayed contrary to their announcement in 2010 of launching commercial 3G before 2010 end. They cite the delay due to Government approval to intercept video calls on 3G networks.

However, the Government has already taken an undertaking from all 3G operators to put interception infrastructure by July 31, 2011 few weeks ago. Anyway, read on:

Bharti Airtel to launch 3G services within a week

With the government clearing decks for video calling on mobile phones, the country's largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Sunday said it will commercially launch 3G mobile services within a week.

"We will make the announcement for the commercial launch of our 3G service in next six to seven days," Bharti Airtel CEO Sanjay Kapoor told PTI.
On the telecom circles in which the service will be launched, Kapoor said that those details will be announced soon.
Bharti had won spectrum (radio waves) for 3G services in 13 of the country's 22 telecom service areas in the auction held by the Government last year.

Recently, after initial hiccups, the government permitted carriage of video calls on mobile networks subject to an undertaking by operators that they would provide interception capability by July 31.

Last year, Airtel's competitors, Tata DoCoMo, the GSM arm of Tata Teleservices and Reliance Communications had launched 3G services in some circles, but were forced to stop them due to uncertainty over interception guidelines for video calls.

Besides, state-owned firms BSNL and MTNL are also offering 3G services in the country.

Another major private player, Vodafone has also announced plans to launch the service within the next three months.
Bharti Airtel has given contracts to leading global vendors -- Ericsson India, Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) and Huawei Technologies to set up infrastructure for providing 3G services in the country.

These vendors would plan, design, deploy and maintain 3G-HSPA (third generation, high speed packet access) networks in 13 telecom circles where the company has won 3G licences.

Bharti Airtel had close to 150 million mobile customers in India at the end of December 2010.

Hoping to get atleast a browsing unlimited from their plans...LOL

Unlikely since they paid a premium for limited 3G spectrum (1000s of crores by all Operators who bid).

Even operators such as T-Mobile UK are clearly mentioning that for unlimited plans, please use your home broadband connection. They said earlier on their website (withdrawn now I think, due to the impolite statement below):

"If you want to download, stream and watch video clips, save that stuff for your home broadband."

and they are being heavily mocked for it. the limits are what? 500MB?

and causing resentment among its customers.

First they blew a big wad of cash on the whole 're-branding' exercise which they could have postponed to coincide with a mega launch of 3G and made a huge impact. Seriously that would have given them a great visibility everywhere. New 3G, New Image, New Airtel... now its all a huge Zero that looks exactly like G turned up on its back.

However, the geniuses at the Company thought it would be a great thing to give their customers a new Logo which cause them to jump up and down with joy while paying no attention to the real services customers look for.

Secondly, they threw away a whole other bunch of money for what? to say 3G is coming. As if we wouldn't have known otherwise after the spectrum auction.

They could have easily saved these both to provide a better 3G experience. (read: Tariffs, Bandwidth and Coverage)

All i want is Rs.99/month with 500MB data on 3G and after that 1.5GB on 2G. This is all i want. Nothing more.I hope they can fulfill atleast this modest wish.

lol u can expect anything like 2GB or 5GB or even 10GB as Fair Usage Policy but not 500MB then no one ll subscribe for 3G they will continue using mobile office for 98pm!!!
