Perhaps Airtel's approach here is a bit different as compared to other operators. Instead of targeting the mass market with a low ARPU, they want to target a relatively smaller number of Professionals and business users(less subscribers but very high ARPU), for whom a few hundred rupees a month doesnt matter, but they would value Airtel's international and national roaming coverage, superior customer support and better network in general.

haha. airtel is not a niche segment player that can stay profitable with that limited group of people.

seriously, a smaller company that runs through the MVNO route can probably take that approach.

not a company like airtel which has spent the maximum on getting the rights for 3g.

if airtel was to follow that strategy... they would have never bid high for the 3g rights. they would just have rented the networks of other companies and offering a premium service at premium rates.

Yes that is true. For Rs650 you will get 1.25GB data free. Post 1.25GB you will be charged 1paisa/100kb... When the amount reaches Rs2000, the speed will reduce to 384kbps and you will not be charged beyond Rs2000. So it is unlimited plan with max cap of Rs2000. Not sure why they are capping the speed after Rs 2000. If someone want's to spend Rs 10/MB even after reaching Rs 2000 let them do that :-)

@Fuzzy_Child They make people fools by introducing these plans but they know that the same people are not foolish enuf to use this kinda crappy expensive service for so long for that much money

Some where else i read after 1.25GB, it will cost you Rs 1/MB till amount reaches 2000. Then speeds will be reduced to 128kbps.
