The final piece of good news was that Airtel defines 2G speeds now as 20-30kbps instead of 40-50kbps.

20 - 30 kbps surfing speed ? right?

^ Yes, kilo bits per second.

damn! i am also getting around 30kbps speed (with a bit of luck) as most of the time sites doesnt load at all...
wasted 98rs !! :(

i thought 3g on edge plans was capped at speeds slower than edge? this is the reason why i have 3g disabled on my phone. 3g eats more battery provides worse speeds.

^ Thanks for the tip, my colleague on pre-paid got 3Mbps for a day and is now back down to 2G speeds. Switching to 2G only network mode increased the speed.

Airtel has stopped 3G free ride in 2G recharges.
Unlike vodafone which rejects 3G network and connects in 2G (edge) network if your plan is a gprs plan,
Airtel will connect in WCDMA/HSPA but speed will be max 40 kbps.
If you have 2G pack better force the 3G phone/data card to connect in 2G/Edge only. You can easily get 160-230 kbps in Edge depending on the signal strength.
But if you have paid for 3G and get less than 1.5 mbps ,you have right to be concerned.

It is totally on luck. I have been using Airtel 3G using 2G recharges, I got 3G speeds for the first 5 months. Then for next 2 months only 2G speeds on 3G network. The next 2 months 3G speeds in a loop :)

I have a question..

I'm in Mumbai.. My friend who was on Airtel 3G on Prepaid, got charged for Roaming on EDGE in Lonavala, while now he has 3G there so didn't get charged.

Has this changed?.. I will be annoyed if I am paying upwards of Rs.750 a month for 3G and getting charged when I get dropped to EDGE due to network coverage not being adequate (which is their fault)..

I'm shifting away from Vodafone due to unbelievably rude and snide customer care executives who don't care about a customer they have had since 2001.
