Please note that 700Rs BSNL plan is just a promotional offer.
You have to count it as Rs 1499 plan

If they have launched the service today itself, then i guess they might have also come up with some offers for 3-6 months like bsnl. there is no ban on pvt. cos. to offer such plans, if they want to ! So thats no excuse specially when they rule the international bandwidth themselves.

:Oonly mr sunil mittal is that rich for paying this huge amount of money for 3g:grin:

Any one from Chennai activated 3G. I am using N8. Currently i having the promotional 2 GB data for 6 months. If i activate 3G would that plan is active?

Send an sms as 3G to 121 and wait for confirmation. Once 3G services are activated, switch off your phone and switch it on. You should get a message about free 2G/month data offer activated for 6 months. If you do not get a message then remove sim and reinsert it and switch on. Try it and let us know.

Please note that activation of 3G services takes less than a minute after sending 3G to 121.

Airtel has clearly declared that their 3G data plans are not going to be cheap. They are looking at providing quality i.e good speeds (i hope they stick to it).
BSNL lanuched 700 plan just to get hell lot of customer on board as they were suffering from severe losses.
Also note that airtel has paid lot of money to get 3G license. Surely they are going to collect it from people like you and me :)

What is the APN settings is it same as GPRS?
Yes its same as GPRS - airtelgprs.com

what good are the speeds if you are literally paying mmm what? a buck per MB (or more?).

@dhanjayk
Thanks Dhananjay. Since I never got the confirmed reply from airtel customer care I am little skeptic about enabling 3G. I have emailed [email protected]. I will enable 3G once I get the reply from them.

Which handset are you using? If you are using one of the listed handsets under 3G offer, you may send an sms right now. Even if some excess billing happens, you may ask for passing a credit by threatening to cancel your subscription.

Threatening to cancel subscription is like "Ram Baana (Arrow)" to Airtel these days :hysterical:

@Adminji,

I agree airtel is very costly compared to BSNL. I dont know what speeds will be after some days but today with 2 to 3 signal bars, i am getting speeds over 1.5Mbps
I also have a BSNL 3G sim and i get less than 1Mbps most of the time during peak hours.
Still i like BSNL and i dont know why. Thats why i have sent an sms to port my number.

Airtel has paid a lot of money for 3G license, true but BSNL has paid the same except for delhi, mumbai where MTNL has paid for it!

But yeah they can't collect the same from me as anything related to Airtel is a strict no-no for me. I just like Airtel only when i have to rent about it.

As for BSNL its working fine in the north, i would like to pay for even 1-2 mbps rather than burning a hole in my pocket for contributing towards those fancy ads that airtel spends its money on !

Regarding the amount paid towards spectrum, there are two ways to look towards it. Some will think ...... aaaw .... thats so huge. But on the other hand the spectrum they have got is for 20 years. Also the biggest part is just have a look at the revenue they are generating from the existing 2G circle. No body is looking at that.

If there operating profit is in thousands of crores in a given Quarter, then i don't think they are heading towards bankruptcy, rather I don't know how many users will go bankrupt if they keep sticking to Airtel 3G.

But they have to get back the amount invested in 3G auctions in anyway. I feel they will have a tough time in bringing in new customers. The same ting happened to BSNL 3G a few users ago but they have gradually decreased their prices and now are a very solid player in the 3G space.

How many customers does Airtel think of by this plans in a city like Bangalore? I guess they will have a tough time even to cross 10k and 100k will be dream come true. Leave the smaller towns and cities they cant even think of more than 1k customers with this plans. With this do they expect to get back their auction money !

Students/young will never go for this plans bcoz they know what this 1.2GB crap is. It may be some who will only go by the 3G name and take the service only to experience horrendous bills.

Unfortunately we are the culprit, it was wrong to think that pvt. players could give us a better deal than BSNL. Leave alone toppling them their pricing can't come near BSNL in even a year from now.
