Ok this is the real deal dewd. You have decided to run for Tv series and heavy data . This can be only facilitated through torrents...for now.But for this u gotta identify some basic stuff about torrents.

1) Is ur port for the torrent client forwarded successfully/ U have no NAT problems? {no need to look for it if u are behind a modem.}
2) Are the series well seeded?
3) You arent leeching!!!

I say this...cause their are 5 very basic rules for sucessful torrenting:

1. Cap your upload

Limit your upload speed to approximately 80 percent of your maximum upload rate. You can check your upload speed over here (never trust your isp)
http://infinite-source.de/az/az-calc.html.
Once you know your maximum upload speed, change the max upload (to 80%) speed in your torrent client’s preferences.
Don’t get me wrong, everyone should share as much as possible, but if your upload rate reached it’s max, your download rate suffers significantly.

2. Hack the max TCP connections

If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This seriously hurts your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to a high amount of ip numbers. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it also cripples your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch;
CODE
http://www.lvllord.de/?url=downloads&lang=en
it allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (more on this here)

3. Check seeds and peers

A simple tip, but o so important. Always look for torrents with the best seed/peer ratio. The more seeds (compared to peers) the better (in general). So 50 seeds and 50 peers is better than 500 seeds and 1000 peers. So, be selective.

4. Change the default port.

By default, bittorrent uses a port 6881-6999. Bittorrent accounts for a lot of the total internet traffic (1/3), so isp’s like to limit the connection offered on the these ports. So, you should change these to another range. Good clients allow you to do this, just choose anything you like. If you’re behind a router, make sure you have the ports forwarded or UPnP enabled.

5. Disable Windows Firewall (or at least configure it to allow exceptions)
It sucks. Windows Firewall hates P2P and often leads a life of it’s own. So disable it and get yourself a decent firewall, sygate or outpost for example.

Last but not least… Buy a faster connection… :P

Hmm.... you might consider joining a private tracker. You'll get better speeds there, though you have to maintain a good ratio.

hey even faced speed problems while using utorrent and azureus, i hv been using bit comet since the last 6 months and no other s/w has given me better speeds than it. i know some ppl say bitcomet is crap but i don't think so. btw i hv tried port forwarding, changing max half open connections etc and still the speed was b/w 0-6kBps while on the same torrent i was getting speeds of 13kBps on bitcomet.

IT all depends on seeders and leechers. The less the leechers/peers in ratio with seeders the better the speed u r gonna get.

As far as i've seen it also depends on what speeds the seeders and leechers are uploading at. Like last night i was d/l'ing a torrent on a private tracker with just one seeder and abt 20 odd leechers and still my connection was maxed out. And i don't think i need to elaborate on why that is so. But yea, the seeder/leecher ratio theory works for public trackers. Other factors are which torrent client u use and how it's set-up (depending on ur connection speed), port forwarding and the well known max tcp/ip connections hack.

I have hacked tcp/ipto 50.utorrent is reporting that port forwarding is not enabled!

How do I enable it in Windows xp sp2?

Will instalin another firewall solve this firewall?

Please suggest what free firewall to use which is not a resource hog! :)

I have followed advice given in step 1 linkhttp://infinite-source.de/az/az-calc.html

I have changed the upload,downoad limit and queing as advised.

I don't know hwo to do this port mapping aND stuff.

I will not be able to upgrade to faster 256 connection as it's expensive for me for now.

I will have to stay with my home 699 plan for now. :)

First of all if u r runnin behind a modem...which i am guessin u r then u dont have to wrry about port forwarding. Its a function that has to be enabled in a router to surpass its firewall.As i said...outpost and sygate are good firewalls. Kaspersky isint that bad either.I never mentioned anythin about port mapping dewd...so dont wrry about it.Upgrading ur speed was just a suggestion...xD!

You do require port forwarding as the 220BX provided with Airtel connections these days has a built in firewall/NAT. As regards the procedure, it's fairly simple and has been discussed several times already. Still, am quoting real_india's original post (modified the last step a lil if u don't mind :P) for ur convenience

Setting up Port Forwarding in Beetel 220BX

1-> Configure your torrent client to listen to a particular port. In utorrent u can enter this value in Options menu-> preferences->network-> port used for incoming connnection. Any value between 50000-60000 is recommended.

2->- From DOS prompt, type ipconfig. Note the IP address that you get.

3-> Now, go to 192.168.1.1/main.html

4-> Click on Advanced Setup
Then browse for the NAT option. You reach NAT --> Virtual Servers Setup.

5-> This is where we setup port forwarding. Click on "Add"
- In this window, select "Custom Server" & enter the name of the app for which you are setting port forwarding(in this case utorrent).

6-> In "Server IP Address:" Enter the IP address you noted earlier
- Below, enter the port no. you selected in step 1(fill it in "External Port Start" & "External Port End")

7-> In protocol select TCP/UDP (we require both).

8-> Click Save/Apply and the modem will reboot.

9-> To check whether the port has been forwarded properly or not go to Options>>Speed Guide in µtorrent and click on Test if port is forwarded porperly.
