^ Why not, they paid for the bandwidth and the premium for unlimited plans. They are entitled to use it. If Airtel did not have the bandwith then they should not have started these plans.

Only airtel has advised to implement the Fair Use Policy

"Also the service providers should be free to implement fair usage policy and restrict the
few bandwidth huggers’ from the pack who deteriorate the experience of the majority
normal users."

So i do belive its airtel alone and not ISP's in general.

Q 3.3
Any other suggestion to improve quality of internet / Broadband access to end users?
Bharti’s Response:
1. The regulator should enable the following:
a. Local Loop unbundling for enhancing the broadband access penetration
b. Easy access to ROW for accelerating the access network growth
2. Internet across the world is a best effort based services as the whole network is managed
by various Carriers / ISPs / ASPs and datacenters. The network itself is highly unpredictable
and is influenced by various events, usages, existing performance levels and failures across
the world. However analyzing it closely Internet means connecting the user to the content
and vice versa. The quality of services depends on transferring IP packets with predictable
network availability and quality parameters. To make the network more predictable and to
bring sanity, it is as mandatory to bring the content closer to the user as much as possible.
3. A joint effort by the regulator and various/content providers is required for localizing the
content within the country. The same can be facilitated by moving to higher level of
Internet exchange on domestic level and datacenters in the country. The traffic between
the service providers within the country should get switched with in the country and should
not loop back through international route and other transit provider. More and more
datacenters should be built up in the country which should facilitate the co-location of
most popular content with in the country and even to regional levels.
4. Also the service providers should be free to implement fair usage policy and restrict the
few bandwidth huggers’

bandwidth huggers ?

Bharti was the only provider which suggested a fair usage policy

How did this become a policy that Airtel is using from a consultation paper that it is called right now in the link above?

By the way, Airtel told me that they will resolve my complaint by 1:30 PM today and I haven't heard from them yet. Will keep this group posted on the responses I get from them.

In the meantime people, let's get this to the mainstream media and tell them how Airtel is out to screw their own customers. They won't even flinch till someone starts talking bad about them and till the shareholders take notice.

So here are some suggestions:

[*]If you have a blog, then blog about this
[*]Join the Facebook group (there may be some issues for now about the Join link but they'll get fixed)
[*]Write to all the India specific tech blogs and sites that you know of about this - Tech 2.0, Chip, TechTree, TechShout, PC World etc
[*]Log complaints with customer care about this and tell them that the customers were not apprised. If they use the word "TRAI" ask them for the specifics - Article, clause, URL etc of the TRAI ruling if any - just don't let them use the word TRAI and get away with it
Some points to remember:

[*]We need "bandwidth huggers" who can get the best from the internet to spurn the economy in India by sharing the ideas that they find on the internet - if you can't experience the best, how do you spread the word?
[*]Take the example of Miro HD Video Player | Free internet tv and video podcast player. which promotes free Internet TV with an abundance of useful information for Indian audiences
[*]Take the example of a household with 2-4 users of broadband on 1 Wifi connection who would use their unlimited connection for completely legitimate purposes and still hit the cap in 10-15 days
[*]Take the example of people who download various Linux distros via torrents to distribute them to people who don't want to pirate a Windows and yet get a working operating system like Ubuntu for free
[*]Take the examples of Indian tech startups like Rajshri.com and In.com who are providing free video content on their sites to increase demand for their products and hence churn the economy
What Airtel is doing goes against all of the above. Yes, we might have alternatives but before that we need to know whether the culprit here is TRAI or Airtel or both. Till then, this needs an open debate before the TRAI implements something without consulting the consumers and sleeping with devils like Airtel.

Damn!! Where's that Rage against the Machine CD when I need it the most.

WTF! What happened to the definition of Unlimited? How can they do this, aren't the unlimited users paying an extra premium for this very thing? :@There are no 512kbps and 1Mbps unlimited plan on their site anymore. Is this the broadband progress the government wanted because it seems we are still living in times of rationing. This reminds me of the frog in a well, one step up then two steps down. :wall:

is this only for metros or for all cities??

earlier comcast also did the same: but the dl limit is 250gb.
Comcast Metered Broadband Official ? Beware What You Download

i recently downgraded to 128kbps connection since i cannot afford a 256kbps line...no i have to outsource my downloads from friends who dl less by utorrent...i have dl more than 10gigs for this month over p2p and i have already reduced my downloading habit by 40% :wall:

i cant believe that they proposed this to TRAI and they allowed them without consulting us.HEY admin you are our only hope.File a case against consumer court or TDSAT.I am with you

Airtel was to respond to me about this complaint I registered by 12:30 today, they didnt and I called back. They said that they will get back to me by 18-Feb!!! I asked why and they said that this is because they "have recieved another complaint from someone else regarding the same issue". Which makes no sense to me at all on why I should wait.Since I love CC so much, I am not going to let them give me a degraded service till 18th without a response, I've asked their manager to call me in the next 30 mins - he seems to have gone into hiding.Keep up the presssure people, we need an explanation with the exact TRAI details if any!!
