the fact remains... broadband has to be cheap and unlimited for one to make full use of it. without it computers at home are practically of no use. they do not even make a good showcase unless you have a mac!

Let's all sue Airtel. This is where developed nations get an advantage over developing nations. They have nicely built 'human rights' in their constitution. We on the other hand don't have it, if we threaten Airtel also about suing they won't give a sh1t about us. :|

@vebk,Add Steam to your list. I don't know how many use it here, but I do and it can easily suck up ~4GB, per game mind you, for downloading a game and its updates.

linux can demand updates of a GIG in a month :)windows has fewer updates. unless you are going in for a service pack. mac os x has also relatively smaller updates.

My mail to Airtel, with no response from their side yet:

Hello,

Just for the record my DSL user ID is ************ and my airtel landline number is ***********

I am sure Airtel would have received lots of phone calls and e-mails from its angry customers after it has recently announced the so called "Airtel Fair Usage Policy" for the unlimited broadband connections. I don't understand how Airtel managed to include the word "Fair". Your customers are calling it a Unfair Usage Policy. Previously on online forums one could see Airtel customers vouching for Airtel and proudly state that its services were the best and it has the best customer and tech support services compared to any other ISP in India. But all off a sudden Airtel drops a bomb called "Airtel Fair Usage Policy" and one could see the same loyal customers spitting venom against Airtel. Among youth one can easily hear bad word of mouth publicity about airtels decision to implement a policy that curbs download speeds. This are the same people who would earlier recommend Airtel Broadband to all of their mates as the best ISP. But not anymore. I dont know if Airtel has done anything similar in the past that has brought it so much bad PR.

Instead of leaping forward Airtel is making its customers go back 2 steps. Most of India is already on such slow broadband speeds, and add to it this draconian policy. The fair usage limit on 256kb unlimited plans is 15 GB. In the era of online HD videos, music, education etc etc how long will it take to exhaust the 15 GB for typical family of 4 members ?
I know Airtel has a huge bank of loyal customers, becuase of great and unmatched services it has been providing for such long time. But it would be a huge mistake to assume that they will remain loyal forever if such unfair practics are adopted. No other ISP today matches the quality of service that Airtel provides. Maybe BSNL broadband provides quality internet but its customer service is pathetic. I believe the day other ISP's improve their standards, there would a outflow of Airtel customers to them.

If you want to see how agitated your customers are than please do a Google search for "Airtel Fair Usage Policy". Their are so many websites and user forums full of airtel customers crying foul over Airtel's decision to implement such restrictions on download speeds on unlimited broadband plans.

I wonder, is Airtel's infrastructure so poor that it has to resort to rationing on measly speeds like 256kbps ?? If yes, than God Help India.

I wonder what calculations were involved in deciding the threshold limits before reduction of speeds. I assume most of Indian home users are on 256kbps, how did Airtel come to the conclusion that a mere 15GB limit is a very "generous" limit in the internet information age where everything from shopping to entertaintment to education has started to revolve around Internet.

To conclude, I would strongly suggest that Airtel improves it's infrastructure quickly and get rid of such malpractices involving curbing of download speeds. Unless ofcourse if Airtel wants to loose the customer patronage built over years through great service. In the short run if you can't provide the real unlimited experience, in my opinion a limit of 30 GB would be more appropraite for a plan like 256kbps unlimted rather than a measly 15GB before you start curbing the download speeds. Higher limits should be provided for higher bandwidth plans.

I hope good sense prevails.

Thank You

i've not switched my modem off since last 7-8 days now. normally i would have used it tad lesser. but i'd prefer to be a bandwidth hugger, now that airtel has already told em what it thinks of me...:)
