Man ! I hate this !I hope these big shots open their heads and work on it or otherwise they gonna face lose .

For eg an ISP allocating a 5 Mbps virtual circuit from a particular DSLAM to the ISP backbone and sharing it with 50 users. Now if 25 users turn out to be full bandwidth utilisers it would mean that there is a good chance that at any given time they would run the connex at the max speed available to them, thereby affecting the bandwidth available to the other users of the same 5 Mbps pipe.

However, this explanation is not to endorse the FUP, as ideally, the ISP should increase the 5 mbps pipe and not cut down speeds of users coz each customer has the right to use the connex to the max coz that is what he is paying for.

So FUP is an easy strategy employed by ISP's to bail themselves out of bandwidth problems without investing in or upgrading their network.

ok, so their FUP only allows for 10% of possible downloads, can we say that they can only handle 10% of users on a connection running full speed ?

Say they can manage only 25% currently , that means they can double the utilisation for no upgrades.

Yes, its obvious they are looking to increase customers while reneging on promises mande to those that helped them get customers in the first place :frown:

We dont know how they arrived at those figures..whether its an arbitrary fix or based on actual usage stats, we can only guess..However, we know that we are not getting what we were promised and that should be the basis of our complaint.

I dont think Airtel is providing 1:1 ration for speeds higher than 256 kbps. When I first got my Airtel unlimited plan it was called as a Cyber Cafe plan in my account and it was removed later probably after TRAI mandated 256 minimum for calling it broadband.Later some ISP started offering higher speeds and said "upto xxx kbps" which meant the speeds may vary from 256 kbps to xxx kbps (higher) depending on how many customers are using the same Airtel's "Cyber cafe" :D

umm i have rarely faced speed problems on my 512k plan. downloads can peak at 66kBps but usually hover around 55-60.

what airtel is doing now is something sify did a couple of years back and we all know how good their reputation is nowadays.

150MB per day in the name of unlimited accounts. that is what sify does in the name of fair usage.

Hi Bro !!
I too want to have 512kbps connection from airtel ... currently have 256kbps unlimited for rs649 /mnth.. what is the speed for downloading a 700mb movie and how much time it takes .. I hate my plan it gives crappy 25-30kb/s speed
please reply !

To clear any confusion regarding the ultimate data transfer amount that Airtel will provide with AFUP, I have created a Google Docs spreadsheet for both Home and Business plans. All information were gleaned from BlackScorpions's post in this thread.

I started this as a way to understand AFUP limits and also as a way to try my hand in google docs. I don't know if this is going to be useful to anyone. If you can tell me how, I can give view/edit permission to people here.
Here's a screenshot:

Let me know if there's any corrections necessary.

Certainly, but the exercise shows there can be another reason that 'similar' experience is being affected, namely increasing the contention ratio or adding more customers.

So there are 2 possibilities:
- adding more customers
- ppl hogging their connection.

How are we to tell which is responsible for affecting 'similar' experience in this case :)

thats true. However IMO, they dont need to increase the no of customers for the problem to surface as the existing contention ratio concept is itself flawed...the moment people start using their connections to the maximum..which will happen with people in India getting more and more aware abt BB as well as more rich content being posted on the web..all ISP's will face bandwidth crunch unless they decrease the ratio and increase upstream bandwidth.
