Airtel Broadband: Port Forwarding

Here's a simple answer . Port forwarding WILL NOT increase your download speeds but yes it will help in case of torrents. If you do not have ports forwarded then other peer who get ur ip from tracker cannot connect to ur client but your client can properly connect to them . So it will just take more time for your torrent client to pick up speed since it has to connect to other peers and no peer is connecting back to it . After your torrent client connects to many peers you should get proper download speed .However when you are seeding a file you might have very less upload speed .

Ok guys, one last question. Now I download torrents at 30kbps and upload them at the same speed. All I want to know is after port forwarding will my d/ speed reach 40>kbps and also will my u/l speed reach 40>kbps?If incase this is not going to happen then please tell me how should I revert back to the original settings of my Network Connection. I have made note of all the original IP ADDRESS,SUBNET MASK, DNS SERVERS etc.,. before setting up a static ip.Should I just click "obtain an ip address automatically"? Because before setting up the static IP, this was "checked"Thank You for all your replies, it has been helpful.

Start/run cmd ipconfig 1.What you get ? 192.168.1.100 255.255.255. 0 default Gateway 192.168.x.x Enter defaultgateway for accessing your modem page.Hope you are getting connected to Internet.2.I do not know, how you did PF, without accessing the modem ! Where did you enter the "STATIC IP" given by PF program?

1) I'm @ office now, I'll let you know what exactly I get when I start>run>cmd>ipconfig after I get back home.

2) I haven't done any PF, the only thing I have done is set up the static IP which, I belive is one of the steps required in port forwarding(PF). I set up the static ip by visiting this guide on http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm.

When you visit the above link and scroll down to step 9, you have an option to enter your original IP address (which you obtain by typing ipconfig in your cmd window) and it will automatically generate a desired static ip for you.

Please let me know if I will get a boost in torrent speeds by PF, I'd asked will I reach around 40kbps d/l & u/l speed on a 256kbps connection?

After getting into run>cmd>ipconfig/all, under PPP adapter Airtel I get the following information.

DHCP Enabled: No
IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xx
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway: 122.xxx.xxx.xx (Tried entering this to accesss my modem page but din't work)
DNS Servers: 203.xxx.xxx.xx 203.xxx.xxx.xx
Net BIOS over TCIP: Disabled

Does everything seem to be alriht?

All xxxx confusing. There is nothing secret about the IP addresses and DNS addresses.

Opendns : 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 ( for any ISP)
Now you have to use the default gateway to access your wifi router.
In your case Airtel Ip address is the default gateway.

Now Start/Network/Lan/Properties/TCP/Ip PROPERTIES
select assign automatically IP and dns and try. Port forwarding.

Whoa, everything just went above my head for a six.

All I could get is, you're trying to say that to access my modem I should use my IP address? In short you say that MY IP ADDRESS and my DEFAULT GATEWAY are the same?

Yes, thats true my IP address is the same as my default gateway, but I still can't get it to work. When I enter my IP address in my browser, "page does not reload". I just can't get into my modem access page.

One thing I want to make it very clear, the whole point for me in doing PORT FORWARDING is to get an increase in my download and upload speeds (in case of torrents). If it's not going to happen then I would rather be happy with whatever I'm getting right now.

Any screenshots or proofs that what torrent download and upload speeds can be achieved on a 256kbps connection?

I hope you get what I am trying to say.
