I like HAYAI's 5 mbps flat fee plan, i will surely a keep a software aside that counts my usage.
And seriously i don't have any mini gadgets like I PHONE, BLUE BERRY or any other like HTC. I just have my SE wifi phone which i don't use for surfing when at home, I use my laptop only most of the time, i think 5 mbps would b enough 4 me.

But how much speed can 1 expect from 5 mbps connection, 5 mbps = 500 kb/sec ???

Its more than what i need??

5 mbps will get you 640 kbytes/sec, more than enough for your surfing needs.

You shouldn't need to count your usage. So long as you don't outright abuse the connection, you'll be fine.

From 5mbit/s you can expect anything up to 625kbyte/s, so I guess somewhere in the vicinity of 550-600 should be a safe bet most of the time.

Within the Hayai Zone you'll still get anything up to 128mbyte/s... but most hardware won't run that fast so you can probably expect around 70-80mbyte/s from run-of-the-mill computers.

But wait... From your posts in the Fivenet thread, you say it disconnects often and others are saying they get nowhere near 10mbit/s - some in Navi Mumbai are saying they get 200kbit/s (or kbytes? the posts weren't clear).

Although I admire Fivenet's gall with having this plan, I have to wonder that if they don't have such a stable network, perhaps some other provider is more suitable - maybe Reliance is OK (if anyone other than Sach92 cares to comment) or maybe Spectranet.

I don't use that plan(with citywide DC++ network you don't really require that plan ) and by what i have observed from the discussion of other users, they manage 400Kbps on an average which is pretty decent considering the cost.

Yes, I've heard the same - except customers on the SSV network seem to suffer a bit...

There is one usb adapter called " engenius" which gives u the max speed out of your broadband, Its good for LONG range wifi, specially when u want to use your neighbours wifi.

It comes with 200 mw high power, but unfortunately their USB is defective & breaks easily like in 5 months or so, if not handled properly.

This is the 4th or 5th time my usb adapter broke. Now i will just look into some other brand like ALFA usb adapter with 500 mw power.

One day i got 300 kb/sec speed on 2 mbps connection.

Apart from the fact that using your neighbours WiFi is not legal in India, what a pity our wireless access is WPA2 encrypted by default (so you'll at least have to ask for the key).

For public places we have been considering another option which would be a login system similar to one that I recently encountered in a hotel in Auckland. The system sets up a separate VLAN for each customer using the AP so they can't see each other on the local network, and would be ideal for cafes and stuff, but, it allows you to set up which websites the user is allowed to browse for free, so we could for example make it possible to view *.hayai.in but no others.
