Please suggest best option in price range of 20K-25K.
I finalised HTC Desire 816, but it is out of stock in my region. Flipkart is having 3rd party sellers who are looting and selling it arounf 27K.
What about Moto X ?
Can Nexus be considered ? It is listed at around 27K on Flipkart.

The only good point is that this person would probably use it only for calls/SMS... despite the talk of whatsapp etc in future.. So, in one way he may never experience the lag...

Dialer is quite laggy for me on my Nexus 5 :D But then my address book contains thousands of names collected over the years on Gmail. Actual people I call is less than 5.

I think besides obvious differences in features there are two things that should stop you from getting HTC Desire 816:
  • Software Update cycle compared to Nexus or Motorola (Big one, and mostly decisive for me).
  • Service centers and customer support.
Otherwise I don't find Nexus or Moto X to be any better than Desire 816 for even heavy users.
Also here is a naive comparison based on features of all three of them:
Connectivity: HTC>Moto/Nexus - HTC has dual SIM support which kills the competition in connectivity depending on your requirement.
Winner - HTC
Screen: Nexus>Motorola>HTC - Nexus and Moto are protected by Gorilla Glass 3 but HTC doesn't have any protection. Also PPI levels of both Nexus and Moto are higher than HTC but considering the screen size differences in these sets I think you can ignore PPI.
Winner - Nexus
CPU/GPU - Nexus>HTC>Moto - Nexus and HTC are both quad-core snapdragons where as Moto X is dual core. Now you may argue how sometimes dual core is as efficient as quad core but I think think this not the case. Nexus has a highly powerful processors followed by should-be-enough-powerful-for-most processors of HTC and Moto. Now GPU confuses me, so no verdict - even though all three will play everything you throw at them.
Winner - Nexus
RAM - Nexus/Moto>HTC - 2/2/1.5. Although 1.5 should be enough too but the more the merrier.
Winner - Nexus/Moto
Camera - HTC (13 mp)>Moto (10 mp)>Nexus (8 mp) - HTC has the best camera imo. I have used Nexus's camera - wasn't impressed.
Winner - HTC
Storage - HTC/Moto/Nexus - Just saying this because of external storage option for HTC. Can be totally opposite for you. Moto X scores most points for 64GB internal but I think that hasn't been released in India. Also 32GB of Nexus is enough for many. But HTC has merely 8GB internal with external support of 128GBs!
Winner - Draw
Battery - HTC>Moto>Nexus - Just based on some comments on GSMArena. Also I have witnessed just average battery life in Nexus 5 hence HTC must win this part.
Winner - HTC
Now the big daddy - PRICE - HTC/Moto > Nexus - I think this should sum it up. This is a big difference in Nexus's price and that of Moto and HTC.
Winner- HTC/Moto
Hence I totally don't find a killer reason for buying Moto over HTC while price kills it for Nexus.
So my choice - HTC.
And if you look into smaller Indian/Chinese players, there is a huge night of comparisons and thoughts waiting for you.

Moto X(bought this for my wife) - I have never seen any jitters when playing games like Temple run, subway surfers. But occasional lagging happens on my note 3 which has better specs.
Active notifications is a very good feature. Tried using app that mimics this functionality on note 3- but that drags down the battery life. With exclusive low powered core on Moto X, this works great .
Always on Google interactions really works. But then it's for showing off initially.
Display bright & vibrant - though I prefer Note 3 display .
Camera is average. But front camera selfies sorts of comes out well.

Speaker sound level is good (not as loud as note 3). I like the sound quality in Moto X speaker.

Probably this will be the phone that I wouldn't put any custom ROM as stock firmware/features is almost perfect.

A good hardware can be Tweaked for Excellent performance, but if you try to tweak a 512MB RAM based phone, you are already on cheapest possible device running android, and still wanting more.
Recently a Good 3G phone Karbonn A-16, reduced its price by 3.5K
so people who bought it at 7K, felt they are buying some basic 3G device, but now its 3999/- what would you say to that.
It also has Mali 400 and can run even a couple of Decent games like dead trigger 2 etc
Not Bad for 4K INR.
I would consider it a decent Low cost Budget Bridge till you watch the upcoming Manufacturer fight with specs and price
and then buy the phone you earlier think it was out of budget.

Moto X has dedicated processors for special functions. Functions that are not available on any other Android device in the market today.
No not the processor - dedicated cores but single processor, but I think they are mostly for things you might not want a dedicated core for?
I mean things like Voice assistant, switching to driving mode automatically. That camera thing is cool though.
They are cool but over a period of time I tend to use my phone for call, sms, email, a bit of camera, games & music and whatsapp. But that's me. People should love Moto for their innovation. I do. But that isn't drastic.
Also I forgot to mention - Notifications in Moto just kills every notification style out there. And this is one feature that is actually pretty useful.

I would have gone for the Moto X if it had arrived in the market before Nexus 5. Looking forward to X+1 because I do not think I can go back to 720p after using Nexus 5 for a few months now.
