I think Kumble's a bad choice. I suspect his camaraderie with the panel members was a factor. But, it won't have a big effect for the next one year because India is mostly going to play test matches in India. The Indian spinners have a good chance to benefit from Kumble's knowledge. And Karnataka players might benefit too. ;-)

I dont think any coach ever made any difference to Indian team. Even Kumble will be removed after couple of years.

Anil Kumble Unwilling To Continue As Coach, Virender Sehwag May Take Over After Champions Trophy: Sources – NDTV Sports

Anil Kumble is unwilling to continue as Team India Head Coach. Sources have told NDTV that the former India captain has expressed his unwillingness to stay at the post after the issue of a tiff between him and team captain Virat Kohli snowballed over the last couple of days. According to the sources, if Kumble does not relent, then former India batsman Virender Sehwag may take over after the ICC Champions Trophy.

I guess Kumble was brought at last minute to avoid Shastri becoming coach. Now perhaps same happening with Sehwag being brought in as Coach.
