Let's see. I don't even want to get into the storage crisis she would get into, in a couple of days time of raw file storage. This is one expensive hobby and even the OneDrive 1TB plan would not last for long if you want to keep the raw files.
Using online storage is the only (debatable) sensible and easy way to go to be honest. One doesn't have to worry about disk failure and data loss. I save files to OneDrive realtime, all the time.
She's safe with 8GB as long as her usage is limited to photo editing. If she gets into video editing, things might get a little challenging, but again, would still be manageable. Unless she aspires to edit and process 4K files.
yup. she is currently paying for both icloud AND google photos from what i heard. i do not have an open slot on any of the office groups i know off so i cannot get her on the onedrive plan right now. would see if she asks me about storage solutions. backblaze only works for backup so won't work here. bandwidth is not a problem because i think brother's floor has both spectra and airtel both of which are essentially unlimited and speeds are good.
would the m1 8gb macbook be good enough for raw file editing? 16GB is not easily available. other option is intel 16GB. i am guessing ram is not upgradeable on the macbooks so kind of a messy situation to be in.
Please do not go for 8gb ram version. I know people who are struggling to do heavy editing with 8gb version. At some point of time they felt lag while transitioning in various softwares (including optimised ones)
go for m1 16gb ram version and you will not regret
as i said, it is preferable but not readily available. 5-6 weeks of waiting period after placing order from my understanding. she is not getting into professional photo editing so as long as it works fine for casual usage, it should be fine. i guess if she finds it underpowered for her use after a couple of months, she can pass on the 8GB model to niece and get the m2 16GB later this year. niece is currently using a budget lenovo 2 in 1 and she has already managed to damage the body at multiple places so i doubt it would last for much longer the way she uses it.
price gap between 8gb and 16gb is also quite insane from my understanding. would have been great if it was somehow upgradeable at a later stage. i guess it would require replacement of entire motherboard in this case which is well not really a good option.
Ah photo editing, I thought you meant video editing. Photo editing is fine. I imported a 50 mb RAW file into lightroom, edited it and saved it as jpg. Everything was instant. Lightroom subscription also comes with 1TB of cloud storage so files can be stored there.
Cool. Would ask her to get Lightroom subscription. It costs 10K per year with 1TB storage from the looks of it lol. Office 1TB is much cheaper on shared plans though lol.
